I have a '96 Maxima. Lately, the A/C does not really blow cold air. The only time it gets slightly cool is when i'm on the freeway. Is this something I can fix myself, or do I gotta take it somewhere?

First, get it checked out to see what exactly the problem is. You might just be low on freon.

Is there a cheap, yet reliable chain I can take this too...like Jiffy Lube? Or Pep Boys?

Sears!

$99 to have my son's car charged. Went from blowing 80 degrees to 47 degrees. Jiffy Lube or a place like that told my wife it was fine.

I know it'll be expensive for my car. I'm still on R12.

Figure out if you use 132 or 12.

Jesus...100 bucks is a lot. Since my car is a '96, i'm pretty sure i use the newer, less expensive freon.

Yeah, it should be 134a. Chain stores suck IMHO. Find a reputable independent mechanic. Or if it's just low on freon, you could do it yourself pretty easily.

"Or if it's just low on freon, you could do it yourself pretty easily."

You cant buy freon unless you are certified.

You can however buy R134A AFAIK.

You can buy entire transfer systems at Autozone.

I went to AutoZone yesterday and described my problem and they told me it was best to a mechanic.

Yeah, I meant 134a, not freon proper.
