Ok all, I know that I have asked about a pc firewall before, and I haven't set one up yet, but now I want to know what/how to set one up and crack at the same time. Prefer free/easy, but if I have to spend then I will.

What I need is info on OS, and how hard to set up. The only linux that I have ever tried was klinux, and I sure didn't have to do much there!!;) I am sick of ports not being secure/stealthed, and the DPC kicking our arse!

What I want to use is a p 133 as the firewall, and hope that it can still crack for us, not that it is much but am trying to help, little as it may be. I got my linux compatible nic from odeen today and have a 3com that is working under klinux, but was hoping that someone could help me find out if my farralon or linksys lneII pci, or realtech net-r422, can be used in linux, so that I can add another p 133 to my herd.

Thx
and sorry if this sounds messed up but I am screwed up and what the he!!

You don't have permission to access /~router on this server.

My co-worker uses Freesco, or you can try LRP. I'm personally using a full Red Hat 5.2 distribution with PortSentry to do firewalling and NAT.

HMM...looks like their admin has a permissions problem.

danzigrules,

NOTHING is as easy as Klinux to setup, but Freesco isn't too bad as far as Linux goes. If I can figure it out, anybody can.:D

Well I just happen to have the latest Freesco zip file on my hard drive.
Let me know if you want it, I'll email it to ya.

I've set my borther's little network up using Freesco as the router for his cable modem, it's not hard. (but it could use a little clearer instructions)

I see in your profile danzigrules, you're on @home also, so it'll only be a half brainer. :Q
All you'll need to remember is that @home will be the 1st network.

Might be a no brianer for a linux GOD like you Kilowatt, but for a moron like me, I'd be throwing the pc out the window!:D!

If you mail that zip file to me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thx all

I'd use the ramdisk myself.
Ram would be faster, granted you had enough, 16MB - 32MB should be OK for just a router.
If you wanted to setup the http sever, you would want to use a HDD.
Any HDD over 500MB would probably be overkill.

You can enable the DHCP & DNS servers if you need/want them.

call me stupid or lazy, I don't care, but since I know that a lot of you have done this, let's make these as easy as possible on a dumb @ss.;) Here is how I have my network set up:

main pc has 2 nics in it, one is the farralon that goes to the cable modem, 2nd nic is a linksys lnepciII, ip 10.0.0.1, that goes to my 5 port hub. This pc also has the nat32 program on it, ip 10.0.0.100

2nd pc has a linksys lnepci that goes to the hub. ip is 10.0.0.2. gateway is of course 10.0.0.100, this is the same on all pc's.

3rd has a realtek net-r422, that goes to the hub, ip 10.0.0.3

4th has the 3com, this is the one that needs to be the firewall, it's ip is 10.0.0.5.

My hub has an uplink port too, that has yet to be used.

Do I set up the firewall with the wire from the cable modem, then link to the hub port or the uplink port, from the 2nd nic? Then uninstall the nat32 program from the main pc?

Thx

Two Linux supported .........are you listening to me, Put that beer down........

..as I was saying two Linux supported nics in the router/firewall box.
One for the cable modem, one to your hub for the rest of your network to connect through.
All the other boxes will use this box as their Gateway.
All the other boxes will only need one nic.

Remove the nat32 program from "Main" (temp disable it for now).
Setup the Freesco box as what ever IP you want for the 2nd network, just point all other boxes to it's IP.

Thx Again Kilowatt, hope that I don't have to bug you again;)

<edit> after I get this running, no use for zonealarm?

 I saw in another thread you said you were "Catchin a Buzz on Beer". ;)

It probably wouldn't hurt to leave zonealarm installed on your "Main" box, (or the others for that matter) if you use that all the time to surf the Inet.
