OT: Arizona in August - what is there to do?

Hi TA.

I'll be visiting Arizona for the Filemaker (an alternative to MS Access) DevCon which is in Phoenix this year.

We plan to visit the Grand Canyon since it is (relatively!) near by. What else would you recommend doing? 🙂 What is there to see?

So far (in terms of the USA) I have visited Boston when I was 7 or so and last year I went to the DevCon in Palm Desert, California, so theres lots to see yet! 🙂

UPDATE: See my last post in this thread for the current question!

Exit air conditioned building and head straight for a swimming pool, do not get out unitl the sun goes down, enter airconditioned room and watch movies. Exit airconditioned room, enter airconditioned car, go back to convention....repeat. 🙂

Arizona in August - what is there to do?

Sweat.

😀

Hang out in a mall...check out Fry's (and pick up some goodies while you're there).

Once the sun goes down...head to Tempe for good eatin' and good nightlife.

Ain't that the truth! 🙂

OT: Wow, I just noticed how targeted the ads are for non-subscribers. Topic was Arizona, and all four ads were about Scottsdale or Arizona.

LOL, OK 🙂

Palm Desert was pretty hot last year (Around the same sorta time). It was easily 40 deg C during the day.

I do plan to visit Tempe - Rockford Fosgate (car audio manufacturer) has their HQ/factory there so I wonder if they do factory tours? I'm really into car audio... 😀

Nothing else? No famous attractions? Nice routes to drive etc?

Frys is what, a PC hardware place 😀?

You could always go golfing. If you don't mind losing 20lbs of water weight 😀

But it's a *Dry* heat.

Yeah....so's my oven! :Q

The question begs another:

What kind of moron would schedule an event in Arizona in August?

Now... Colorado Springs - I could understand. but... Phoenix?????

A. Sweat Profusely.
B. Smell bad

It's hard to even breathe in Phoenix in August. YIKES!

honestly, words of advice: a/c is your friend 😀

that section of USA is bad during the summer sun. hehe.

Thanks for the info guys.

OD, Kitt Peak observatory sounds excellent. I'm going with my boss who has a PhD in Radio Astronomy... 😀 (thanks also for the other links)

DanC - dunno, not my idea but I think the experience will be worth it 🙂

I'll be sure to pack lots of ice 😉 😀

If the one with the most toy's wins, then Frys can make you a broke winner!

I fly into Oakland at lot, drive south about 15 miles to visit Frys, then go to UPS and ship it all home before I even go to Petaluma.
And then I always try to drive to Dallas, so I have plenty of room in my truck for when I visit the Frys there.

Schedule your flight to leave late in the day when the air is denser, that way if a heat wave shows up you won't be too delayed. They have to delay flights when it gets to hot, there isn't enough lift to safely take off in a plane sometimes.

UPDATE: Need some info on where to land.

AFAIK, the nearby airports are Phoenix and Las Vegas. Los Angeles is not too far away. We intend to visit the Grand Canyon before making our way to the conference in Phoenix. What would you recommend?

Thanks all.

😀 couldn't resist.....

2 slices of bacon, 2 eggs, one slab of sidewalk in the sun(preferably a clean spot, no bird droppings or animal (dog) pee)

place 2 slices of bacon on sidewalk and allow to simmer until it begins to curl, flip the bacon and stomp on it with clean shoe to remove the curls. allow to simmer until reaching your prefured level of crunchiness, flipping and spomping when you see necissary.
crack open the eggs and pour them onto the sidewalk sunny side up (yolk facing up) and allow to simmer until outside edge becomes a light brown, flip and simmer for another 10-15 min, to your liking.

The bad thing is I've acutally done this before in Central Texas a few years ago just to see if it could be done. It works it just takes like 2 hrs before they are cooked.

LOL! My first summer here in Tulsa OK, I did about the same, literally fried an egg in the driveway! Took ~45-50 minutes, but sure enough, the sucker cooked!! And its `mild` here during summer compared to Arizona!
Sorry this was a 'tad' off-topic.....

As for Phoenix, maybe catch a Diamondbacks baseball game. They are in a tight 1st place race in the West Division.

Go ahead and fly into Phoenix. I think it's called Sky Harbor (the airport).

The drive to the Grand Canyon isn't too bad and it saves you a long drive for your flight back home should you fly into Vegas or LA

Do not travel anywhere without carrying some water. I'm serious. An hour waiting for a tow truck can put you in the hospital
with heat exhaustion or worse. Always carry water with you.
Now the best thing to do is never go outside as the temps will be in the 110-115 degree range. Of course if they get some monsoon rains
then just add 80% humidity to that 100+ degree day.

Thanks for the responses guys. Dezign thanks for the link to the thread - interesting read.

Main problem is this: We can arrive around the 16th of August, and we need to be back in the UK by the 29th really. The conference is the 25th, 26th and 27th, so any sightseeing needs to be done before the conference (ie the Grand Canyon). Due to time issues after the conference we will undoubtedly be leaving from Phoenix airport.

Question is, how close is the Grand Canyon from Phoenix Airport and Las Vegas airport? If it was closer to LV, then we would land there, but I cant find any maps with that sort of information 🙂

Also, anything worth seeing around the GrandCanyon specifically, apart from the canyon itself?

They're trying to do you a favor... most of the people who will be there probably sit in front of a computer for 1/3 of the day or more... so they're making you sweat off a few pounds =)

you can try this outfit for a tour. You can leave from either phoenix or las vegas.

I would make sure I got there on the 16th. This will allow time for such things as a trip to the Grand Cayon, Kitt Peak and a few shorter day trips. I would guess your best bet would be to fly into Phoenix. And if you feel like a little gambling you could always hop a plane for the short trip to Vegas.
