Looking to buy my own modem so Comcast doesn't get $5 from me each month for this COM21. I am going to go ahead and purchase a tripplite coax surge protector to lessen the possiblilty of problems also. Anybody using one of these? Are the Surfboard series modems as great as everyone says.

Thx

Thanks Engineer!

Funny I have been following the same threads🙂

I have posted some questions about it in the networking forum as well...it's a little slow tonight. I'm sure that unlike myself others are away for the weekend for the most part.

Com21's are pieces of junk so anything you get will be better and will result in less dropouts and problems. I had an SB4100 and sold it to my aunt, and I now have an SB4200, both work fine.

I've had a SB4100 for the past....13 months....and i've not had any problems with it. The only time it hasn't worked properly was when i moved my computer into another room and i lengthened the coax cable myself, using a piece of TV coax cable and soldering the TV type connectors to it! Even then that worked for about 2 months before i started having dropouts! But a replaced, and proper, cable and it's been working fine 🙂 And i'm even using it via USB (which is generally frowned upon in the networking forum 😉)

Confused

I've had the SB4100 since ~last November. Works pretty good and there's a web interface that lets you check out the configuration on it (with logs).

<<And i'm even using it via USB (which is generally frowned upon in the networking forum 😉>>

Well I think that's more of a function of the fact that USB-based hubs for ethernet network connections are lacking or are non-existant at this time... 😉 If you're plugging a single machine into the modem, then fine. But if you want to share that modem with other machines, then things get dicey... 🙁

Yep. But the cable company here only allows us to have one computer connected to it, and they disable the inbuilt DHCP server (which if the network supports it can allow up to 16 or 32 computers to be connected using just a hub/switch) and i can't afford a router so i'm using USB and ICS, and still not had any problems! 🙂
