Slow going on the Net? You can blame Microsoft, lazy admins, or your demon of choice, but the end result was a massive slowdown of internet traffic early this morning. A new worm has taken advantage of an old exploit in servers running Microsoft SQL. W32.SQLExp.Worm, or Slammer, takes advantage of previously reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft SQL Server. The culprit, this time, is suspected to be a heap overflow, despite a patch being available for six months. Read about the fun in our Security Forum.

in M$'s defense, the patch has only been available for 6 or 7 months!!! You'd think some peeps woulda fixed their stuff by now.

AOL, the world's largest ISP with over 35 million subscribers, appeared to survive unscathed. A spokesman for the Time Warner Internet unit said the worm had had no impact on its service.
