There was a worm affecting ISPs across the globe this morning. I wondered why some of the web pages I regularly visit were so slow, or not working....

This occurred at almost exactly the same time that Zuni added the Clown avatar.

Me did :|

The DC where my server is located was out, so this meant anyone trying to get to the Smokeball site met with a nastygram.

I run MS SQL server, however like a good little admin boy mine has been patched since early last summer.

Unfortunately there seem to be a buttload of infected machines out there in the wild and that produced the snafu last night / this AM.

Seems some of the Root servers were affected as well, somebody made a booboo.

Slow going on the Net? You can blame Microsoft, lazy admins, or your demon of choice, but the end result was a massive slowdown of internet traffic early this morning. A new worm has taken advantage of an old exploit in servers running Microsoft SQL. W32.SQLExp.Worm, or Slammer, takes advantage of previously reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft SQL Server. The culprit, this time, is suspected to be a heap overflow, despite a patch being available for six months. Read about the fun in our Security Forum.

For me, the problems started at 23:00 GMT-5 last night, when I couldn't connect to my ISP (kept getting a timeout while attempting to verify user name and password). The problems continued until shortly after noon today, at which time I was finally able to get back online. At first I was just ready to blame my ISP (they've been known to have domain controller problems before), but after seeing this, it makes me wonder...

in M$'s defense, the patch has only been available for 6 or 7 months!!! You'd think some peeps woulda fixed their stuff by now.

Yeah, their listservers were also crapping all over the net too.

M$ sucks toads - that's the only explanation I can think for this crap. They hallucinate.

BobTheWizard, things should be back to normal as I post this, all the links that were slow over the last 24 hours and MSN's mail server seems back on track :)

AOL, the world's largest ISP with over 35 million subscribers, appeared to survive unscathed. A spokesman for the Time Warner Internet unit said the worm had had no impact on its service.

AOL users would even notice a slowdown?;)

Haven't noticed any major problems here, except Pricewatch seems to be down.

Wow, "The worm generated an average of 2,815 packets a second, or roughly 170,000 packets a minute."

Wow, should they find the SOB that unleashed this, charge him 59 cents a second for the bandwidth and the Economic downturn for the world would be over. :Q
