OT: Any chance of a DC coffee shop kinda thing?

Just have a conversation going, or just say what's on your mind? Our own OT-ish kinda thing, or no? Just wondering.

Nah.
For a little while there, someone would start an OT thread for the week for just that kind of thing. If not TAandy is always good for starting one on Friday nights 😛

I think as long as there aren't too many of them at once the mods will pretty much leave them alone.

Plus there are other forums set up by team mates too 🙂

edit- when i first read that i was thing he meant a seperate forum here on AT.
What exactly did you have in mind?

I think it is good for the team 🙂. It is much nicer here than going to OT - which I do not like at all.
OTOH: over @ TAS and soon @ RA the mod-team are so nice - and there are several places for OT-ing and Neffing. 😀

OTTH: can one have too many places to nef?

I've no idea what happened to the IRC channel (think it fell into disuse because there were some offensive jerks that hung around and scared people off), but I'd use it if one showed up again for the ATDC crowd. 😎

This is one of the biggest reasons why there are (& should be) offsite TA forums.
They are places to go & say whatever is on your mind, shoot the breeze, etc - water cooler stuff. Stuff that gets shut down here for not being "on topic", "offensive" or is considered a waste of Anandtech's storage and bandwidth.

We are a large TeAm made up of many individuals, many of us don't quite fit some (or most) of the time. In order to keep the unit as a whole I feel we need to offer extra, "offsite" places for people to go and associate with each other. This in no way detracts from the TeAm, but instead enhances the TeAm by including members who either can not post here (AOL people for example) or would rather not due to personal reasons.

Here's an example of an offsite resource that was greatly used by the TeAm:

Back during seti@home Smoke & I set up a stats page on my webserver.
It showed TeAm seti stats - anyone on the TeAm could go there and see their daily, weekly & cumulative stats & compare how they were doing with how everyone else was doing.
This page received over 250,000 user sessions & transferred over 200GB data to TeAm mates over a 4 year period. This is a service I was pleased to provide, but believe me if someone would have publicly dissed me for doing it I might not have been so happy to be helpful.

IMHO Offsite forums & websites are essential to the TeAm. That doesn't mean that "if you build it they will come". In other words don't get your panties in a bunch if you go & make a site that you think should really help the TeAm but nobody shows any interest. The flip side is that no one here should ever dis anyone who spends their time and money trying to help the TeAm, no matter how misguided you think they are. Public humiliation has no place here. If you think someone is an idiot use PM to tell them so, not a public message - a - private message.

Like my old friend 'Big Weld' says: "See a need, Fill a need" 😉

I just thought I should add that I am not commenting directly about anything anyone here has posted, but it's a subject that comes up often and I've had something to say about it for a while and this looked like a good enough place to 'let fly'.
Thanks.

My idea for this would be like a stickied OT thread at the top of the DC forum. Just a place for us to say whatever. Without the usual inane OT chatter.

Well, I'm going to go OT, for a bit of a rant...

SOAFB! UGH! I fvcking got home from work, and I have errors all over the screen. And not the normal BNS ones. The really bad ones. RAID 5 go by by type. So, okay, I've done this before. I go to try to restart the machine, and access the RAID arrays via the RAID card BIOS. Everything is slow as hell. Starts giving me failed to write errors. Oh fvcking hell... I cringe as I hit the reset button...

When I get to my RAID card BIOS, all but one drive are missing from the array. Five drives. Gone. WTF? Every single drive in the lower SATA enclosure just aren't there. Holy hell. I turn off the machine, check the cables, everything looks fine. I immediately kill a four bank of fans to reduce secondary PSU load, and reboot. The 5 250 gig hard drives decide to come back from vacation....

So now my array is critical, one drive only failed, and the full array of all 6 disks is rebuilding right now... Ugh, that sucks. So no crunching for the rest of the night while this array is rebuilding. 🙁 I need some Bailey's in my coffee now...

Yeah, what happened to the IRC channel?

The irc channel is still up and running, well sorta 😛

If I am thinking of the same irc that we used to use at irc.tairc.2y.net, that BKehoe used to run, It is now ran by LD at irc.thegamebox.net port 6667.

there is also a web based version if you care to look around.

webirc just change the channel to teamanandtech 😀

I've always wondered why people won't use the stats threads for gathering places.

It seems like everytime someone tries to converse in a stats thread, someone complains about a hijack. This idea that we can't say anything except for "thanks for the stats" in a stats thread is what should change.

We shouldn't need a special thread to speak to eachother.

This lack of conversation in the mainstream DC threads just makes the place look dead and uninteresting.

Of course, this is all just my opinion.
