OT: AntiVirus Software

Has anyone used the AVG Anti-virus software, and if so, how good is it at catching a virus? How well does it play with SETI or other software?

Symantec has stopped providing free anti-virus updates so I am searching for another anti-virus program.

Thanks!

I've used it on numerous systems (Win98, 98SSE, NT, 2000, and XP) and it has been great. It has always been much less problematic than Symantec products were for me and I have found no incompatibilities. It runs fine with Seti 😀

As well, they seem to put out updates almost every few days now. For the most part, you don't need to reboot after updates if you are using nt, 2000, or XP. It has always done well catching viruses for me, as well. I'm referring to the free edition - i've seen a few reviews of the enterprise edition and it was spoken of favourably.

I guess this is a pretty glowing report but I've always been very pleased with AVG. 🙂

I used AVP (Professional version of AVG) to get rid of the CIH virus when Norton and Mcafee failed to even detect it. I had problems running it under Windows 2K though so I switched back to Norton. Problem was I couldn't put SETI in the startup folder or run it as a service with AVP.

<< I use it with Win 2K and it works just fine. >>

It does an okay job detecting virus, but sucks at removing it. Once virus migrates into system, AVG can't really touch the system file. This was the case when I got infected with CIH and subseven backdoor. It got into my Windows Me _Restore directory and I had to purge out the entire directory using C:\_Restore\Temp> *.* from DOS.

If you watch the ads you can always get Mcafee for free after rebate.
They give free updates.
I run it on all my toys and have not had problems with it in a long time.
