OT - a slight rant for us DCers

When I try to recruit for SETI I try to get people that are as excited about it as I am. I am not pushy and I respect other peoples wishes. What I don't understand is how people who run Real Audio 8, ICQ 2000b, WMP7, full MS Office install (even though they only use Word), yet they think SETI is just going to run their computer to the ground.

Sorry for the rant, but my ouput has fallen lately because people have dropped off my team because they realise I'm not even close in the race to 2k. I don't know how they determined it was SETI crashing their computer all the time when they are running win98... I told them the crashes are a result of a poorly constructed/configured computer, but they just shrug that off.

btw, this rant can go for all DC projects, but in my case SETI most applicable.

Preach on 🙂

Was talking to one of the admin contacts at work today. In case you don't know what I do for a living, I'm an L2 (Product Specialist) for one of the Big 3 computer companies (don't want to say the name because I technically work for an outsourcer). At our location we easily have 300 seats plus the crash machines (1 per 3 or 4 techs), with each seat being a P2 300 or higher running NT4 all day, every day. On the other side of the building, there's another 400+ seats. Mmm... Assimilate. Anyway, they think that dnetc.exe would cause system instability. Ok, we run IE5, Outside View (a glorified Telnet app), Outlook, a call logging profiling system, a background virus scanner, and a bunch of miscelaneous programs. IE5 locks up on me at least twice a day, Outside View isn't exactly the pinnacle of stability.. Well, you get the idea. Bah. If I ever become admin...

/me drools.

Ok back to reality. I certainly understand where you're coming from.

<< I am a Rush fan, so my opinion probably doesn't matter to you. >>

Eh... I'm listening to Different Stages right now 🙂 Can't beat live Rush. I'm lucky enough to live in Las Vegas, so I'll definitley be able to see them when they're on tour again next year.

Amen brother Mucman.🙂 My experience is about the same as your. The biggest nay sayers are the computer illiterate who barely know how to turn their monitors on, much less understand that it's not going to affect their computers performance.😀

They are PITAs, and a source of frustration, but at least I can cut them some slack because they don't know any better. :Q

The worst ones are those that call themselves techs, but yet react in fear, mis-information, and myth. Instead of checking things out, or testing it, or using sound troubleshooting techniques, they react in an unrational manner and just refuse to check it out based on rumors. And that applies to more than just distributed computing projects. They should know better. :|

I feel ya Mucman. I know where you're coming from. The worst part about it is that no amount of explaining can change their mind. They have it set on what they believe and no amount of talking will sway them. It sucks.

I hear ya, but I have to disagree to a certain extent. A few of these programs MAY have conflicts with certain programs, although that's uncommon. Furthermore, they MAY cause a crappy computer to go over the edge. There are a lot of crappy computers out there with lousy cooling in non-air conditioned rooms, and I've seen a couple overheat when given a program that stresses the CPU 100%. You have to remember that programs like Real Audio and MS Office, etc, essentially do nothing 95% of the time. This is not to say that SETI or OGR, etc. are bad, but really just that they have poorly spec'd computers. However, if their crapola computer works fine 90% of the time without SETI, but running SETI causes their computer to crash, I can't blame them for removing SETI. Most people are not prepared to spend $200 for a new set of fans and a new case.

However, when I am asked advice for a NEW computer, I always suggest NOT getting the fastest CPU, but spending the money on more memory, good quality components, large drives, and a good case/cooling, etc. Then you can ask them to install SETI with no worries. 😉

You have a point Eug, I that is what I have said to them... If their computer was constructed/configured properly they would never have these problems. (2 people having these problems have Compaqs 🙂)

Different Stages is awesome! Have you picked up Geddy Lee's solo project yet?

I have come full circle on blaming SETI for my poor computer performance. When my husband had it installed and running, I'd always take a jab at him for all the crashes and pauses etc. Now that*I'm* running it, it's a different story eh? 😉 It's sort of rough on the hard drive I understand (wrt fragmenting), is that correct?

Eug I agree with you when that's the case. My problem is I can't even get them to install any DC project in the first place!!🙁

i think the only solution is sterilization. that way they can't reproduce and spread the anti-dc gene to their children. 😉 just kidding of course.

Hey Tetsuo316, good idea. I've got some rubberbands we can use right here in the desk drawer.😉J/K

(For the city slickers who don't know, that's the way they castrate male farm animals. Ouch!!!:Q)

Nope, haven't seen it. I'm not much of a Brad Pitt fan. I've only seen one of his movies I really liked and that was Seven.
