I think this is a good way to do it. Otherwise there would surely be offencive and depressive avatars and I dont pictures as avatars.

 
arrgh!

These new avatars are killing me. It's incredible how hardwired the particular hiroglyph of the old avatar with a person's name under it becomes. The new avatars are causing me to do double takes all over the place (him... he's not a clown! where'd dave's Stars&Stripes go?!, ...)
