OSX weirdness.

I was having some issues with the lappie.Torrent files kept getting corrupted and torrents stopped working as well.I also could not get 3 .dmg's to mount.So I decide I will reboot.After the reboot my config had gone back to default.By config I mean my wallpaper dock configuration Safari had also reset etc.However that is set under system pref. seems to be okay. I ran a checkroot program and that turned out clean.What happened.

This is version 10.3.8 Build 7U16 on a G4

edit: Before I get crapped on for dl'ing cracked progs...that is not what I was doing.I was dling porn and I got the progs I was trying to install off a mac share/freeware site.

I had a similar problem before, but I caused it to happen. I didnt get the problem with the torrents or disk images not mounting. This is what I did.

I wanted to try to command in Terminal that forces the trash to empty, the sudo command. I made a folder, empty folder, and I dragged it to the trash. I used the sudo command, and it deleted the folder. So I go into textedit, create a document, and I tried saving it. Well, it would not let me save it. I couldnt save anything at all!! So I restarted, and guess what happened. The dock was oversized, and every SINGLE APP that was in the dock, including those in the Applications folder, "reseted" themselves. I had to reconfigure all the apps to the way I wanted them. And I had a sh!t load of apps. Not only that, I lost my Pictures folder, my "Stuff" folder which contained very important documents, and my Documents folder, which contained my Powerpoints, Word documents, etc.

I then found out that if you use that sudo command on aliases or small documents, you are prone to data loss. And I lost 2gb of data because of my stupidity.

This probably won't help you, but I just thought I should share a similar (sort of) experience you had.

I still cant get any .dmg's to mount. I am trying to install clamav.

There is a way to force dmg's to mount. You have to use an app called Mount Me! This little app can also force mount external drives that refuse to mount, such as external HD's, thumb drives, etc.

Is your RAM buggy/corrupt? How about the hard drive integrity?

Try this..

Reboot into your install cd.
Do a disk repair.

then...

Reboot into normal OS, then run the permission repair from your applications/utilities. Don't run it from your install cd, it will have a incomplete set of permission checking due to newer updates.


Apple has these guidelines.. One of them is that your not allowed to create programs that muck around with permission on your file systems. But programs do that anyways, usually during install time (including Apple's programs). So I always run disk repair then permission repair first, when I have problems. Always.
