I cant stand "finder" and the gratuitous clicking (among a HUGE number of other things). So i ask, is there any way i can strip away Aqua and use someother interface? I know this is possible with linux, how about OSX?

BTW, for those of you that dont know--i HATE this OS. All of its little quirks, bugs, crashes, poor memory management, etc hinders my productivity by more than 20% everyday. Im tempted to use my virtualPC all the time, but i dont have all the necessary windows software and im sure the speed would kill me. Well, im off to try and find files that moved themselves or are "hiding."

Is that something i can just "turn on?" Or is it more involved (dl, remove aqua, install, config, etc)? Thanks for the tip though, i will look into it. :)

Hows this for a new problem? Im generating a lot of files in matlab and saving them to a subdirectory. Go to the directory in finder, no files. Remove the subdir from the save path no problem. WTF? Its not permisssions either because this is new behavior, started monday.

Or this, in finder i double click a sub dir (so that only its files are showing), ctrl+a, and delete. Guess what? It deleted all the files (save for one that was open) in its PARENT directory. If i didnt have to move files between 3 remote machines all with different paths i would just use command line. :(

The funding for my appointment is gone at the end of the year and at that point i will say good riddance to OSX (unless forced, kicking, screaming, you know, the usual :p)

You should be able to download it, install it, and run it. I think I used fink to do it previously. Haven't messed with it lately though.

Something has to be wrong with your machine. I don't have any issues that are anything similar to that...

Mac OS X is a pretty sweet OS.. I don't understand people who diss it, especially if they haven't even used it (not talking about OP here).

and I'm primarily a Windows user.

I'll give you that OSX has quirks. It does have a handful of bugs, but nothing like you make it out to be. Crashes are very rare, so you have some other issue with your system (most likely memory related from the looks of it). Memory management is first class, and saying that OSX has poor memory management shows that you know very little about the OS at all. Frankly, this sounds an awful lot like PEBKAC or a hardware issue (although likely a combo of them).

However, I will admit that finder still needs work, but it is hardly a productivity killer when you have tools like Expose at your fingertips, along with easy add ons such as Quicksilver.

Being an OSX hater/user for NUMEROUS reasons i will look into this "fink" of which you speak, but mind you i have squinty eyes on you. Yes, you n0c.

That being said, if you want to devote your soul to Steve Jobs and use nothing but mac SW im sure you will have little problems (how could you not in a closed architecture?). Here is the rub though, OSX "thinks" they know whats best for their users and as such they remove TONS of options. I find OSX way harder to learn how to use than windows--wait that cant work (im a windows guy, duh). Whatever. We have a number of os9 machines in the lab and they seem to operate like one would "expect" most of the time, but my OSX machine does some seriously nutty sheet. Sheet that i CAN NOT CONTROL. For example, why doesnt OSX remember where i like my windows and at what size? Why does it occassionally remember WHERE i like it, but "forgets" the size? Why cant it remember my system settings for sound (mute)? Why does it take 3 hours to copy 0.5GB of data across a 10T line? Why does it take me 5 minutes to figure out how to use something new on OSX when it only takes me 0.001 seconds on windows? Ugh, if you read through all of that im sorry, because most of it was simply qualified rant.

OSX,
