So I'm planning to install OSX on my VMware soon,

Anyone have experience running OSX on a PC or VMware in specific?

Any potential problems, hangups, or general issues I should watch out for?

I assume it will be generally plug and go.

Thanks for your time

So, you are planning to run an OS X virtual machine on a Windows computer, or are you planning to run a Vista64 virtual machine on a OS X computer?

Generally speaking, OS X Leopard does not work correctly under VMWare. If you want to do that, you need to stick with Tiger.

Of course, OS X was only designed to run on Apple hardware so it likely won't come with drivers for the hardware that VMWare presents. That and it's a violation of the license to run it in a VM or non-Apple hardware.

Only if it is anything but OS X Leopard Server... that one can be virtualized on another OS X Leopard Server system, at least, i remember reading that.

Just because it is against the license agreement does not make it illegal necessarily. At best it is of questionable legality, under fair use.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include?

1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
2. The nature of the copyrighted work;
3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Unless there is precedent it is unlikely that such use would be actionable, as I will be doing this purely for research purposes which will have no affect on the market

Even if that's true it's not relevant here.

And do you want to be the one to pay for the court decision on that?

If anything, the ability to demo OS X on a PC would make me more inclined to buy a Mac if it works out for me. But I'm far too much of a small fry for anyone to worry about what I install on a VMware, your concern is appreciated though.

OS X really isn't anything special and you can do a little demo at any Apple store. You'll never really know how well you like it until you use it for a while and I doubt even putting it in VMWare will let you use it enough to get a true feel for using it every day.

Just completed the VMware install, tried to install "hacked" VMware Tools, but they have crap functionality. Looks like I'll either need to dual boot (not interested) or buy a mac.

I guess I'm deleting this after all

Gotta say, I have not been really impressed with VMware despite all the great things I've been hearing about it. And now this, the one thing I would've been interested in is running Mac OS on a PC, but well, it's just not going to work out ... :(

VMWare is great at what it does, the problem is that VMWare presents a set of generic hardware within it's virtualized environment and OS X is specifically designed to not run on non-Apple hardware.

Yeah ... duly noted, I was just experimenting.

Truth be told I'd love to have a mac, but I just spent a bunch on my PC.

When I make more money I will definitely have both.

Peace
