*ack*. I'm having big problems here. Part of my job is to do substantial amounts of file transfers to artists over at newsday (local newspaper). After 2 years of using email with a lot of hassles, we finally convinced them to setup an FTP server to handle the transfers.

Ok, so on our end, we have a bunch of macs running osx (jaguar) which NEED to be used for preproduction stuff for the files. Basically, the main g4 acts as the processing plant and archiving area. My problem is that every osx ftp client I try (fetch, +some freeware stuff) to use is quirky and ends up dieing a couple files into the transfer. VERY annoying. I can't just reconenct either. actions get queued and I have to force quit and sometimes it's still messed up.

*sigh*. It's not the server. I can transfer zillions of directories and files on my pc to the same server, never a problem. It's got to be the mac.

I was hoping to just share the files over the lan and ftp stuff over on my pc, but I can't login as the main user over windows (yes, I did check the "allow windows login" box), and using seperate accounts, I can't create/manage directories (locally) in the secondary users' path without an incredible amount of labor.

-help-

(god I hate macs sometimes)

Install fink at fink.sf.net. Once that is setup, do an 'apt get install ncftp'. NCFTP is a command line FTP utility but it's great.

As for your windows file sharing problems, mine works fine - which is of no help to you of course! Ensure you're using the short username to access the account if you happen to have a long username.

Were these computers originally running Jaguar or were they updated to run it? Considering the amount of networking problems you're having, I would say something is amiss in the setup. FTP clients shouldn't just die like that, and the fact that you're having windows file sharing problems is also worrisome. I would also post this topic over at the Mac Ach at Ars Technica. You'll probably find more of an audience over there.

It connects, but has privlidge issues. It won't let me upload anything? Weird.

How are you connecting to your server and from what? I would assume you are using OS X on all machines and mounting the shared volume from the finder. Is the server using OS X server or another client copy of X? Whats the windows boxes using? XP?

as for the shring privalages, what are you using to share form? A volume or shared folder like a user folder? Is this a drop box? If so drop boxes only have write access by default. If you are using a shared folder under a user then you must make sure the access privalges are set to read/write access for all folders contained within that main folder/directory. You should be able to conform all subfolders to the sharing privaleges/ownership of the main (via get info) then set all subfolders rights with on click.

I really don't know off the top of my head why you are timing out though if its from one mac to the other on X. I've never had that issue during file transfer. When I get a little more info from you and I can double check my stuff at home (2 macs and 3 PC's on a LAN all playing nice thanks to OS X) I may be able to help a little better.

You do not need to use an FTP application for basic file sharing between OS X and XP/windows boxes. Even remotely they are not hard to access and you don't need an seperate FTP software when the serving is done by OS X.
