Ok....so i have an external drive i want to use with XP and OSX...what format can i ...err format the HDD in so that both OSes can read and write to it? I was thinking FAT32 but i'm not sure >.>

You want FAT32. I believe the stock advice is to use the OSX machine to perform the formatting.

If someone does have a full list of what each supports, I'd be interested to see it.

FAT32: Read and write support by OS X, boots Windows, afaik also good support by other OSes.
HFS+: Boots OS X (standard format), Windows access possible with third party software (which has got bad critics of AT users in the past).
NTFS: Boots Windows, reading access by OS X, writing support claimed by third party software.
UFS: Boots OS X, not supported by Windows (but by a variety of other OSes), third party software may be available.
