I am using a Tektronix THS730ATektronix THS700A series

I'm about to shell out $300+ for its Wavestar software so I can get the full version for use with the 730A... but i need some professional 2nd opinions on this unit. I don't have much experience purchasing oscilloscopes... I can always get a better model if necessary but portability IS necessary, and datalogging/acquisition is also a must. Any ideas?

Do I keep this current 730A, buy the software, or get a different oscilloscope + software?

I can't help you to be honest, but I would post this in the highly technical forum. It's probably going to disappear into the nethervoid in OT before you get a useful response. You might get better luck there - topics don't fall off as fast, as there isn't crap for 95% of the postsl ike there is here.

I just purchased the 720P and got the wavestar software. It is good for documentation and analysis on a computer. I highly recommend the software, easy to use once you get used to it.

As old as the 700 series scopes are, they are bar none the best handheld scopes on the market. Fluke is the only other option and they don't come close to Tektronics in that market. Keep your current scope, it has the highest bandwith/resolution of any handheld scope out there.

If data logging is your primary function, have a look at some Dranetz products. Prepare to spend some $$$.

Kmurphy: Did you buy the Wavestar software? I couldn't get the 2.7 demo to run properly in my Win98SE laptop... it would just give me a fatal exception error.

Thanks for the info on the 700 series!

beer: will do! thanks for the tip

Yes, I bought the full version of the Wavestar software. It works fine with a Dell Latitude D600/WinXP Pro. What is your application?
