GOOD:
* Seven words - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for Best Picture!!!
* Cast Away DIDN'T get any nominations (beyond Hanks)! (Corrected)

BAD
* No Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh. (But, it's a good field. Not like she lost to something stupid.)
* Gladiator, Traffic and Erin Brockovich weren't THAT good.

I'm sure a lot of you are going "w00t!!! Gladiator BAYBEEEEEEEE." Don't get your hopes up, it doesn't stand a chance of winning.

PREDICTIONS
ACTOR: Ed Harris - He's well respected and been previously nominated. "Pollock" was an actor's dream role.

ACTRESS: Julia Roberts - She's the biggest female start in Hollywood, they like her and she WAS the best thing in a overrated movie. Possible spoiler, Ellyn Burstyn.

SUP. ACTOR: Probably Benecio Del Toro for Traffic, maybe Willem Dafoe for Shadow of the Vampire.

SUP. ACTRESS: Hard to call, Densch and McDormand have won Best Actress before, Hudson's too young and so on. Toss up.

PICTURE: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - The TWO Soderburgh films may split the voting, Gladiator is too popcorn and Chocolat is two lightweight. CT, HD is the highest grossing foreign picture ever and it's atill gaining momentum. Unless it gets the Best Foreign Film Oscars asa consolation prize, it may go all the way. I hope so. It was the most magical movie I saw last year.

Gladiator was the most overrated movie of the year. It was about 1.5 hours too long.

Action was nothing spectacular.
Story was ho-hum.
Character depth was non-existent.
Special effects were good.

Honestly, I'm disappointed but not suprised that Billy Elliot and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? didn't get more recognition. They were the two best movies I've seen in a while.

How Oh Brother wasn't nominated for either of the 2 music categories is beyond me. Everyone I know, whether they liked the movie or not, loved the music. It seems Randy Newman gets nominations now for no other reason than he's Randy Newman. All of his stuff sounds the same. It's painful to my ears. Likewise for Disney movies. If a Disney movie is released with a musical score, regardless of quality, it will get a nomination.

I think Billy Elliot suffered because people viewed it as Waking Ned Devine III (Saving Grace being billed as WND II). It's a shame, it was a fantastic movie.

The only reason I care at all: "me-too" Hollywood will spend the next year producing more of whatever won last year. If crapola like Gladiator wins, we'll be overwhelmed with more pseudo-action movies that take themselves far too seriously.

Traffic, O Brother, and Snatch are probably my favorite movies of 2000. Crouch Tiger, Horny Dragon is one I wish I missed as well as Cast Away for that matter.

And if DefRef is right and Bent Over Tiger somehow pulls out with Best Picture I will be very angry. What the hell do you people (the CTHD lovers) see in the film? Its action was alright, its love story was poor, its acting was good, its story sucked a$$, and its directing/scripting was only above average. Why does this film that seems to be going at 60% get a place next to true contenders like Traffic? It boggles my mind. I might take a trip off that mountain if the academy makes the wrong choice...

Only one I saw was GLADIATOR. Fun flick. I normally, don't like the movies nominated or that win.

AMERICAN BEAUTY? What a crap movie. Wasted 2 hrs of my life with that POS.

uncouth: How do you figure that the love story was weak? Because no one got nekkid? My g/f loved CTHD even more than I did and she thought the love scenes were hotter than many films with panting, naked bodies.

I think a lot of anti-CTHD peeps went in expecting nothing but mindless chop-socky and didn't know how to deal with a mature story and deliberate tempo breaking up the fights.

My 1/50th of a dollar.
