Lotr is one of those series that will go down in history as one of the greatest and the most epic movies of all time

Matrix is just a phase

The semi built-in fanbase that Lotr has as an established fantasy "classic" has given it an advantage over the Matrix. I remember thinking the animated version was great when I was 9 or so. Hopefully we will see when they are both wrapped up who comes out on top. They are both well done at least so far.
Keeanu & Oscar in the same sentence? No.

The Matrix won't be nominated for any of the big awards and Peter Jackson will NOT win for best director.

True. It's actually 3 concurrent movies that share the same title and storyline. Move along, no trilogy to see here.

And yes Peter Jackson will win a well deserved oscar for Best Director.

The Matrix will not win any of the important awards, most likely not even nominations in categories like screenplay or direction, but it will probably win some technical ones like FX or Sound or something of that nature. The strength of The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions will be their revolutionary techniques to present a scene, but not the actual scenes. They are ground-breaking in terms of what we can put in a movie, but they are not in and of themselves ground-breaking movies. They are simply fun and entertaining movies with a little philosophy thrown in. However, fun and entertaining got Chicago an Oscar last year, so I may be wrong.

Peter Jackson has a shot at best director, but it is not in the bag as the academy has never consistently liked films that deviate very far from our actual world, even though LOTR will probably go down in history as a symbol of cinema in this decade. He will have to contend with directors of films that are more Oscar friendly, like perhaps Gary Ross for "Seabiscuit," Joel Coen for "Intolerable Cruelty," Edward Zwick for "The Last Samurai," Mike Newell for "Mona Lisa Smile," Lars Von Trier for "Dogville," and Anthony Minghella for "Cold Mountain."

Just be glad this isn't the RottenTomatoes forum, or you'd be insulted to death for even suggesting the Wachowskis as Best Directors.

the winner will be one of those heart wrenching stories of love, passion, betrayal and probably something jewish that is shown in somebody's basement in NY and LA around Christmas - so they can say it was in distribution before the end of the year.

I read a review praising Johnny Depp's performance for the upcoming Pirates of the Carribean movie. Here's an awesome quote that caught my eye:

Somewhere, in an alternate Hollywood that doesn?t venerate playing drunks and retards as the pinnacle of thespian achievement, they?d give Oscar nominations for a performance like this.

AFAIK the Wachowski Brothers are ineligible for Best Director Oscars.

I recall reading that if proper attribution is not given to key crew at the beginning of the film that is in violation of the Guild rules.

I'll double check on that.

matrix will not get an oscar for anything besides sound or fx.

I'm a matrix fanboy btw, but reloaded was not the sequel I was looking for.
