U.S. Third Army Moves Command HQ to Kuwait

By Associated Press

December 10, 2001, 6:18 AM EST

KUWAIT -- The Third U.S. Army has temporarily moved its command headquarters, including the control of its campaign in Afghanistan, from Georgia to Kuwait, the American Embassy said on Monday.

"They made this decision because of time zone differences and the distance," an embassy official told The Associated Press. The move began two weeks ago, she said on condition of anonymity.

Lt. Gen. Paul T. Mikolashek, who heads the Third U.S. Army, was now working out of Camp Doha, outside Kuwait City, instead of Fort McPherson, Ga., she said.

The Third Army's operations, which stretch from East Africa to Central Asia, include ground forces involved in the defense of Kuwait, the campaign in Afghanistan and humanitarian aid in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Army central command is known as the Third U.S. Army and forms the army component of the Florida-based U.S. Central Command, the nerve center for America's military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The Kuwaiti government backs the U.S.-led war against terrorism, but many ordinary Kuwaitis do not want to be seen as offering support to a military campaign against fellow Muslims in Afghanistan.

Kuwait, a small but oil-rich state, is a major Washington ally in the Persian Gulf and owes its 1991 liberation from a seven-month Iraqi occupation to a U.S.-led coalition that fought the Gulf War.

They could have simply moved a detachment over to act as a mobile command. The military has ships designed for this exact role. Bases can be set up in short notice to do the same. They chose to move the command, which has far greater implications. Watch out, folks, this is not a minor development in the story.

Oh my...in any case, I agree that the US shouldn't go after Iraq *right* now just because it looks bad. Still, if we were to, it wouldn't be without reason

Things should be cleared up in Afghanistan before going after Iraq. Cleared up, then I mean, new government, peacekeeping forces, new elections, foreign aid and the whole lot realy. Without full aid in afghanistan the war and all the thousands of deaths in afghanistan have been for nothing.

I always hate seeing quotes like this. We need some new "Loose lips sink ships!" posters. There were many instances in World War II where newsmen would be requested to not file a report on something, and sure enough they wouldn't. The two slapping incidents with Patton (Commander of the Third Army, no less :) ) was one such example, although it did eventually leak two weeks later if I'm not mistaken.

This will take years.

Iraq is a priority right now, as it IS a current threat. Recent heated exchanges between the two countries leaders wern't much of a comfort either.

Its very evident that Bio/Chem weapons are being developed there. Iraq has had enough time to build up their military since DS. They are prepared and won't be easy. Something needs to be done!

<< Not really for nothing. They served the American interests the fighting was intended for... >>

Yes I´m sure they would realy apriaciate that, knowing they died in the name of the USA, and I´m sure their relatives will thank the USA that they at least died for a noble cause, and I´m sure they wont hold any grudge against the USA that things are now worse than before in Afghanistan :disgust:

Bah, there's plenty of poor people in the world who hate the US. Funding makes terrorism possible, not just hatred.

Do you like it that people hate you? dont think anyone does. Hatred is the reason behind terrorism, money just makes it easier. Money or not, hatred is all thats needed.

I'd sure hate to have to tell the families of a future WTC-type tradegy it happened because we didn't want to "look bad" after Afghanistan.

Yep. Only a fool fights a two-front war when he doesn't need to. But again lets keep the pressure on the terrorists. It's hard to terrorize others when you're being targeted.

People on the island of Lehua in Hawaii hate us. They're very nice people. However, when talk turns to government, they yell at me about how much they hate the US. They believe the US usurped their land illegally and want it back. They talk about having a revolution one day as soon as they can afford it.......

Whenever the US makes a decision, half the world will benefit, half will suffer. Half the world will love us, half will hate us. If the US is forced to worry about what everybody thinks, then the US becomes their slaves...

And slavery sucks

i think its about time we took saddam out. screw the international community, in gulf war 92% of all forces were american (and another 6% british). where 92% of intrests at stake american? they wouldn't help even if they wanted him outta there. the europeans especially (besides the UK of course) haven't helped us in 50 years, there not gonna start now. in kosovo a country actually in EUROPE they said they would only participate if america did. we don't need there support, they rely to heavily on us to be any real help anyway.

the UK is the only real ally we ever had.

They died for their country. Not a more nobel death around. And they get religious freedom, women can work again, and no more stadium torture shows by the Taliban.

Yeah Czar, they really fought for nothing. I guess these freedoms are nothing to you huh. :disgust:

charrison,
Without international support then this is just a normal war for the US which pisses some people off and give them a reason to attack the US.

b0mbrman
You gave a one example, but it only takes one person to commit a terrorist act.

Texmaster,
They died for their country, true. But if nothing was changed by their deaths then they died for nothing but their country and thats rather pointless. The NA has almost total control of the country and international focus turns to Iraq then the NA will just continue doing what they did before the Taliban took over, being just as bad as the taliban.

Let them get pissed, let them attack us. But let them know they will suffer for their actions. We do not need internation support to defend our people.
