OS X to XP File transfers are horribly SLOW

So I recently built a windows XP file server, I have 5 500GB Drives in a RAID 5, 1.81TB. So I hook all of that up, get it running smoothly and hook it upto the network. The whole point of the server is a print server and file server for OS X, but also to give my boss his first "real" windows machine. My problem lies when transfering files to the system from OSX. I am connecting the Macs to the server over Samba, and the transfer speeds are incredibly slow, this is important because we do video editing at work and NEED that speed. Whats also weird is the fact that transfering back off the XP machine is about 4 times as fast, literally (transfering 3.1GB takes 11min versus 3.5min) What could the problem be?

my first stab would be to use a real os for your file server...

tbh, I would rather use OSX for a file server then WinXP, but that's just because I can install and configure samba from the CLI like I'm comfortable with.

You might want to check macosxhints.com for Samba speed issues. There are a few configuration options that may help, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

I have looked everywhere on the net. I have tried using the terminal in OSX, with no avail. I have found someone with the exact same problem as me HERE. It is nearly an IDENTICAL situation. I need to run windows because of print drivers... running 6 printers (3 R200s for CD labels, R220, Brother Label Printer, Epson 4800 with Colorburst software) I have no idea what to do. ARGGG!!! Also, I need to have this running so that a complete PC noob can keep it running while I am at college.

Why? You like the fact OSX server gets it's nads handed to it by even NT4 in terms of performance? 😀

Wow, where do you get your performance stats? I've always found Samba to be faster then windows filesharing, especially on the same hardware. But hey, if Bill says so....
