os x on different version of darwin

anyone try this before? say, running the mac os x 10.2.8 gui on top of darwin 7 or darwin 8? or running the 10.3.x gui on top of darwin 8? the reason i'm asking is because the upcoming 10.5 doesn't really look that compelling. on the other hand, darwin 9 (if that's what it will be) is rumored to have dtrace, which sounds pretty interesting. so the plan, if it's possible, is to run the 10.4.x gui on top of darwin 9. but, i'd rather not bork my current installation just to find out.

As far as I know it is not possible to put the OS X GUI (Aqua) on top of a Darwin OS. Aqua isn't open source and there's more stuff between Darwin and Aqua (Link) which partly is closed source, too.

The install base of Darwin is pretty small, afaik mostly developers for OS X and some UNIX gurus use it. There are no "normal" users who have this niche OS.

yes, but if mac os x installed, and then a later version of darwin in installed on top, the only changes would be the darwin specific portions of mac os x. the mac os x specific files should not be affected. unless, of course, the darwin portion of mac os x is different than the publicly released version of darwin.
