OS X disk type and size

I tried making a backup copy of an install disk but because of the size it had to be burned to a dual layer disk. The unfortunate thing is, the Mac mini doesn't seem to be able to read dual layer disks. The original on the other hand seems to be just a regular DVD but stores the same amount of data.

Whats the deal?

It is a dual layer disk, the Mini can read dual layer disks just fine. Burning the OS X Install to a dual layer disk is always a trying ordeal. Tyranicus and I tried for a while, and I think we had 1 good one out of the 6 or so that we tried.

So you think it was just a bad burn? BTW I used an external Lacie burner that was attached via Firewire.

It was probably a bad burn. Your best bet for backup purposes would just be to ISO the disk, and the you can actually delete some files off of the ISO. Things like the printer drivers, the extra languages, you know that sort of thing.

You can use disk utility to repackage the disk into a new image. If you take out the printer drivers, developer tools, and foreign language support you can easily get Leopard to fit on to a single layer DVD.

You may need to bitset the book type of the dvd+r dl to DVD-ROM

I just burned another disk and it seems to work great. When I 1st did it I burned an image to a dual layer disk which is when I had the problem I now did the burn directly from disk to disk and it works a lot better.

Just figured I'd share that info. (The original is now going back to the safe.)
