if this post is in the wrong forum, i apologize in advance.

i am trying to load an os on a system i have just finished building. when the system begins to copy files from the cd, it will get about 60 percent finished and it begins to notify me it can't find files. when this happens, it tells me i can have it continue searching for the files by pressing the OK button or i can press the F3 button to cancel the install. i actually went through an entire setup, with it stopping to ask whether to continue or not many different times, once to see if it would even finish loading. to my amazement, it actually went all the way through the install. when i started to use the system it became clear it was corrupted to the point it couldn't be used.

i thought maybe something was wrong with the os cd. so i tried two other os disks i know are good and it resulted in the same results. so i think i can rule out a bad disk. so i tried a different cd drive which still had the same problem not being able to find files on the os cd. so i think the cd drive can be ruled out. i then installed another hard drive, but it also resulted in the same outcome.

the system is not suffering from any overheating or other hardware failure that i can see.

i am out of ideas. i need help. this computer belongs to someone else.

the speciifics are:

antesc case and power supply
ASUS A7N8X-VM/400 motherboard
AMD Athlon 2700 "barton core"
1 GB Corsair XMS RAM
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80 GB ATA/133 Hard Drive
Lite On CDR Drive

What OS is that?
If it isn't the disc's and the drive's problem... Have you tried another IDE cable?

May be bad sector in a harddisk even hm

It could be bad CD, CD drive, cable (CD or HD), HD, memory, motherboard, power, or CPU.

You say you've checked the CD, CD drive, hard drive so it could still be:
cable (CD or HD), memory, motherboard, or CPU.

* have you run memtest from a bootable floppy or CD?
* are you overclocking?
* have you tried changing the drive cables?
* if your motherboard has a 12v "P4" power socket for stability is it plugged in?
