OS simulator for gaming

okay, i know i seen an earlier thread on this, but can't find it so........

some folks were discussing how to use "simulator" operating systems for playing the older games. Does that sound familiar?

I'm running Windows 7 and was looking for a patch/skin/simulator that would allow the older games. Dual boots are an option but not preferred. Anyone have recommendations?

thanks.

You can use VMWare, which can emulate a graphics card allowing for 3d. It's not super powerful, but it's good enough for most older games. For example, Fable 1 ran okay with low settings (although Fable works fine on Windows 7). DOSBox is another option, although as the name suggests it's made for DOS programs.

The term to search on is "virtual machine" for running older versions of Windows. (For old game consoles the term is "emulator".)

If you're talking about OLD games (such as Dos games), DosBox is what you want. Otherwise, you'll want VirtualPC, VirtualBox or VMWare (among other VM software choices) and install whatever OS version you're looking for.

I haven't tried it but there is XP Mode if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate. I've personally been using ubuntu with wine & dosbox for old games and so far only one game won't run.

Go dosbox for any dos games. Have to configure it for each game, but once you get it set for the game it works awesome, and you can oft times find good settings for a game online.
