OS or processor speed making this speed difference in RC5?

I just got a Linux box up and running and started running RC5 on it. The thing is getting a consistent 777Kkeys/s on a K6-2/450. I've been running RC5 for months on my Win98 machine, which is a K6-3/400, and getting less than 650Kkeys/s most of the time, including during the day when I'm not even home using it.

So, is it because the Linux client is better, or because Linux runs it better than Windows, or is the processor the biggest reason for the speed difference?

The Windows machine does have several background programs running during the day, but none are really active most of the time. I may try killing those before I go to work tomorrow and see whether they make a difference.

In this case, it's a combination of both. Linux does produce a bit higher rate than Win32 and the extra 50Mhz also helps. The larger cache on the K6-3 has no affect in RC5.

Paulson - I would be very interested in seeing a comparison between Win98se and Win2K for the same CPU and client. I recall reading somewhere that as much as a 10% percent improvement can occur. I find it hard to believe that the improvement would be that large.
