OS on Drive

I reformatted my hard drives /u/s and when I installed windows I get a message saying that there is already an OS on my drive. How can this be?

Are you talking about XP? Why not reformat from within Windows setup?

Installed 98se but computer had xp on it. It was given to me, was locked and had no cd.

Run FDISK /MBR from your 98 floppy to ensure that the XP boot record has been blown away.
