OS on an external SATA HD?

So I realized that I don't have the neccesary equipment to install another internal harddrive, because I don't know how to keep it suspended and such (I think I got rid of the screws and stuff that came with my case).

If I have an external SATA port, can I install XP on an external SATA HD?

Thanks.

The computer doesn't see it any different. It will work the same as any SATA drive. You will have to be more careful, ie: reference all the "I spilled blah blah" on my stuff threads.

Then what's with all the crazy stuff on google and such when you search "external SATA HD" and "Windows XP" "install"?

It seems like Microsoft's official position is that you are unable to or something.

Being able to and recommended are very different. Half of what MS says is BS, simply for marketing purposes. Bottom line, it's possible, do it if you want. If you want to mount it on the inside I'm sure someone will hook you up with some screws. go see FS/FT or the Free Stuff forum and make a post!

You got a eSATA enclosure. I would install any other internal sata drive later, just have the eSATA in port 1 of the motherboard. The board sees it just like an internal drive. That's it. Have it on before you turn the PC on.

Pretty cool mobo, I like the fact that they put a SATA port right in the IO area. Looks cleaner than a PCI bracket.

Yes.

So in the XP install, it can't detect either of my hard drives.

What drivers do I need to slipstream to detect my external? Is it still the JMICRON Raid ones?

On my external eSATA drive there is no eSATA port on my board, I use an eSATA bracket that plugs into one of the board's sata ports. The board treats the eSATA drive as if it was an internal sata, both are internal to the bios.

Since your eSATA port is part of the board, what does the manual say?
