So my aunts computer died(window was open and with the rain and wind the pc got wet) She is getting a cpu and gpu and i will combine it with other hardware i already have. As far as her os(windows 7 on a samsung ssd) would i just need to reactivate the license and install the drivers and she should be ok? never happened to me before so not sure what windows does when you change pretty much all the hardware.

Leaving a PC running, while rain is blowing in the window... that's a novel way to force an upgrade.

Anyways, give the PC a few day to dry out, and then try firing it up. It might be OK.

Its a retail disk.

Its was off. She woke up and tried to turn it on and noticed the rug was wet and the top of the case as well. She is a school teacher so i don't think she can last too many days without.

A clean install would certainly be better, but you may be able to get away with just swapping - along with a bunch of uninstalling and reinstalling devices.

If you can get it to boot to safe mode, you might be able to help things along by uninstalling non-existent devices and drivers (for the new build) before trying to do a regular boot. A repair install may be required.

While XP was borderline horrible when swapping an existing drive to a different computer, Windows 7 is actually pretty tolerant. But I have only done it with either full retail or the upgrade, which can be used on different hardware, but only one at a time. OEM is supposedly tied to the hardware, so you aren't supposed to do it, but if you call MS when it doesn't activate, you might get them to help you.

After letting it sit for a while I was eventually able to turn it on. Put all her documents on a thumbdrive. Once her equipment comes im just going to do a clean install.
