OS Memory Dump with new RAM

Hi,

I have recently upgraded RAM on my PC to 2x512MB for my AMD 2800+ 64bit Athlon Processor.

I am frequently getting "Memory Dumps" in Windows XP-Sp2 OS;

While the system works alright with any one of the memory (i.e., 1x512MB at a time); system hangs when I use both the RAM's together.

Config:
CPU: AMD Athlon 2800+ 64Bit
MotherBoard: MSI
Ram: Kingston- 400 FSB -

I am wondering, if there is a way of solving this problem..

thanks

Note: Posted this message in "General Hardware"; though Operating System Forurm is more appropriate; sorry for the incovenience.

I donno. Maybe the motherboard doesn't like the memory? Are you putting the memory in the correct slots?

Try unclocking the memory. That helps sometimes.

Memtest86 is very usefull for these sorts of things.

Open Control Panel, System (Properties), select the Advance tab, click the Settings button for Startup and Recovery tab, and under the system failure section, unselect the Automatically Restart check box. Apply/OK out.

This will cause the next blue screen to stay on the screen until you hold the power key down for 5 seconds. Record the STOP: number and module (and the first 4 32bit listings). That will help shed some light, but testing the memory may be your best course.

Thank you drag/ sellis,

My problem is, both the RAM's working OK, when either of them is connected individually; the problem starts when I connect both the RAM's together (to make 2x512 = 1024MB).
My guess is, both the RAM's may pass the diagnostics; system is crashing when I connect both of them together....

Drag: How do I unclock the memory?

thanks

Depends on the machine. Usually there is some bios settings to play around with RAM settings. You may have to adjust buss speeds.

Make sure that you have the RAM in the right slots. For instance my parent's computer has three slots.. 2 slots I can use 400ddr ram (or actually 200mhz bus) ram, on the third it can only use 333ddr ram. And if I don't have them in the right order then it won't work right. Like I can have 1 or 1 and 2, but I can't have just 1 and 3 with slot 2 empty.

Sounds like a motherboard issue. Your RAM may just not be compatable. It may be a known or common problem with your hardware.. See if there are any BIOS updates. See if you can find a changelog for them.. If one of them says something about fixing memory issues or memory timing issues then install the latest version, but if it doesn't then it probably won't make a difference. Also if there are forums setup by the board's manufacturer then search through that for people reporting problems (and hopefully solutions). If it's a OEM computer like Dell see if you can find information on your system on their website.

Reload your OS with all the memory in it. I've had several machines at work that refused to upgrade the RAM in them until the OS was blown away and re-installed.

Could also be if your trying to do dual channel stuff without matched ram. Even similar ram from the same manufacturer can have slightly different timings.. enough difference that it can cause problems.

So maybe if you can't figure anything else return the ram for a matched set (if it isn't).

Ram troubles are hard sometimes..

edit:

Also I wanted to mention to make sure that you run memtest86 to test the ram before deciding to reinstall windows. If memtest86 runs for a few hours (the longer the better, a healthy computer will have about a average of 1 memory error a year.. So you should be able to run it for weeks with no problems if the hardware is good.) then comes up with NO errors and windows is still acting up then it's probably window's problem.

thank you all guys.

Drag: I will try for bios updates (I will check if they are available on Motherboard mfg website); though I dont know much about the hardware, I have a feeling that this is a mother board issue.

Jeffrey: I have tried re-installing OS couple of times recently; doesnt help. System works only with any one of 512MB ram.

btw, how do I get details of motherboard, cpu ,HDD, Ram etc of a system? are there any software that gives these details...
