OS Lockups because of heat?

My systems have never had this problem before. I replaced my XP 1700 setup and now my cpu is running at 49 degree C or above but below 55 and it seems to lock up. I just reformated my system again. Before I reformatted I had lock ups and BSOD's about once every 2 days if not more. Sometimes on the BSOD's when I log into WIN XP again it would say my Geforce was the cause to the problem. Since I've formatted I haven't gotten any BSOD's after 2 days but I have gotten one lock up without any explanation. My Cpu temp at the time was 50.5 C. Is it my Temps? Any solution/ideas? is it wise to underclock the video card? I've never overclocked or underclocked anything before.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Also I'm using a hardware monitor now, and my core voltage #'s are red. Can someone tell me what the core voltage is supposed to be? mines at 1.79V. I never usually touch that stuff.

I think your core voltage is alittle low. Try raising it in the bios. THat should fix yoru instablity problems. Try 1.85V

I don't know if I would raise the voltage on an already instable system that seemed to lock up because of heat. In fact, the "normal" cpu voltage would be 1.75. It looks as though it is already a bit high. You might want to look at updating the driver for your video card, if you haven't already. That might be causing the trouble. You might also want to see if you can reduce the vcore voltage, if your BIOS allows that. I mean by the smallest of amounts though. If you haven't set it at the present level, maybe the MB is providing a touch too much. But try the video card driver update first.

since testing voltage theories the computer froze 1 time for each setting. I have installed the latest driver for my video card and it restarted on it's 1 time. I have underclocked my video card for the sake of testing and it still froze one time.

🙁

If you have or can get a different video card for testing purposes, I think you need to go that route next. Even if it is only a cheap PCI video card, you should try this. I'm thinking the video card is the source here.

I haven't tested the video card theory quite yet. However I have gotten 3 BSOD's that say

shutting down to protect ...... etc...... IRQL_.....

does that mean I have a irq conflict?

Not an IRQ problem. That's just a "wording" thing. If it is still shutting down like this though you really need to take a look at lowering that core voltage on the cpu and testing a different vid card. Even a cheap pci card would do for testing purposes. Also, leave the video card running at "normal" speed. Do not underclock it.
The other area you need to look at is your RAM. Is it getting hot? Why not go into the BIOS and set the system at "Default" or "Fail Safe" settings (whatever your particular BIOS calls it). Those are the lowest, basic settings for your system. Now, the cpu will probably not show the correct speed but let it go for testing purposes. See what that does. If it runs OK for a while, then go back into the BIOS and reset the cpu speed to what it is supposed to be. Usually this would be done by the FSB settings. Only change the cpu speed though; nothing else. Then test it again. If it fails, then you have it narrowed down to a cpu problem; whether that is the chip itself or a HSF problem.
