OS is reported as AGP 2x. Is this normal?

I noticed on the Nvidia AGP settings tab it shows my card and motherboard as capable of AGP 8x, but the OS as only being 2x. I'm just wondering if it's actually doing 8x or if the OS is preventing it for some reason.

Normally I don't worry about video performance since I don't game, but I'm having trouble getting smooth playback with some 1080i content and am trying to explore all the possible causes.

The first thing to do is check the setting in the BIOS & make sure its set to 8X or at least 4X ... 4X will perform just about the same as 8X but 2X could be slowing things down some.

I've already checked the settings in the bios and they are at 8x. I'm using a nforce2 board and have the latest generic nvidia drivers for both the card and motherboard because the manufacturer's are a lot older. I've seen this question asked a lot on various forums so I know it's pretty common; however, I haven't been able to find an answer. As I mentioned before the tab shows the card and chipset as 8x it's only the OS that's showing a limit of 2x.

I thought about trying the manufacturer's motherboard drivers, but don't want to start making changes unless someone can confirm that the tab is correct and that I'm being limited to 2x. I've seen in other forums where people have said it's normal and to ignore it, but I don't know anything about the level of expertise in those forums.

I have the same info on the NVidia AGP settings tab for my 6600GT AGP system. Despite the OS reading 2x, BIOS and card read 8x and performance is as expected (3dmark).
