OS install on SSD

I'm going to do a clean install of W7 on my new SSD. Is there anyway to migrate some of my other programs from my original HD to the new SSD after I install W7?
 
Are both OSs Win7? If so there's no need to migrate... just clone. It looks like one of your HDDs is a Seagate. They provide a free cloning utility.
 
for the sake of reducing headaches i would do a clean install on the SSD and then reload whatever apps u need

This. I've had strange glitches and irregularities in windows with cloned drives. It was solved by a fresh reinstall.
 
A clean Win7 install and reinstall apps is a different headache. As long as the cloning utilities has been updated there's a very good chance it'll be aligned, unlike a few years ago... actually even just last year.
 
To save myself some potential headaches I'll just reinstall everything from scratch. It'll take a while but I want to avoid any glitches. Thanks.
 
I just added an 80 GB SSD to my system as the boot drive. Previously, the 120 GB SSD in my sig was the boot drive. Here is what I did:

1. Used Gparted to resize the boot partition down to 75 GB and did a Windows repair to make it bootable.
2. Cloned to the 80 GB drive, expanded it to take up the rest of the space, and did a Windows repair to make it bootable.
3. Lastly, noticed it was not aligned and use Gparted to align it and yes, I had to run one additional Windows repair to make it bootable.

A lot of work but still preferable to reinstalling from scratch.

on my old SSD I cloned, the alignment was off and i played hell in trying to correct it. never did get it right and ended up with a fresh install anyway.

On my new ssd, I cloned it and Acronis took care of the alignment and all was well from the get-go, so I have mixed feelings. So far, i'm 50/50 on the matter, but regardless a clean install is best if you can.
 
Clean install is the best option IMO.

Some programs in your HDD will run in the new install without reinstalling
My HDD has win7 32bit on a P35 MB. I did a clean install of Win7 64bit on a Z68 MB.
I plugged in my HDD on the Z68 as 2ndary drive with Win7 32bit still installed on the HDD. I ran some Apps from it within 64bit Win7. Some worked.
 
Installed W7 last night along with the basics, MB, Vid Card and printer drivers. Also AV protection. All went well. I'm not concerned about reinstalling all the programs. I just need to save and transfer my web Favorites list. It would take forever to rebuild it from scratch. Tried to export it to another drive but no luck. Anyone have an idea as to how I can store it and reinstall?
 
I have used Acronis True Image Home 2011 and 2012 to clone from one SSD to another and from an HDD to an SSD and had no alignment issues what-so-ever. I have even migrated from an x58 chipset to a P67 chipset (using the Plus Pack for ATIH2011/2012 with the Universal Restore) and not had any issues.
 
Acronis will automatically align advanced format drives when cloning. I had no issues cloning my OS from my WD drive to my Hitachi drive, and then from my Hitachi to another WD drive (which didn’t have advanced format).

If you use IE?.. simply go into the source and destination's C-drive>users>your name here>favorites folder and copy paste them over. same thing applies to most other browsers as well and just need to find the favorites folder location to copy/paste them over to the new install. Simple stuff.

Your IE favorites is just a folder containing a bunch of .url files. Just type 'favorites' in the start menu, and it'll display the folder in windows explorer. Of course that will bring up your current favorites. To find your old favorites off the old drive dig into:

[OLD DRIVE LETTER]:\users\[USERNAME]\favorites\

wish I would have thought of that. :hmm:
 
I had a lot of trouble cloning my laptop drive to the new SSD. I highly recommend a clean install because it will work guaranteed.

Thanks. Transfered it to a different HD until I finish the install on the SSD.
