Looking for ideas on something that can be ran on a PC that would be excellent for routing, firewall, QoS, Bandwidth controlling/traffic shaping, data usage monitoring and some other things.

I thought i heard of something years ago but i can't remember what it is.

Just looking for something with ultimate capabilities and flexibilities compared to regular routers.

Yep. I use Smoothwall as well. Very simple to install, does everything that you want (and more), and runs flawlessly even on very old hardware.

Thanks

I checked out Smoothwall.....pretty simple, nice, and easy to get going...but it was just that: simple.

I checked out Pfense (finally got it running on a machine today)....this looks pretty nice with lots of options and stuff.

I ran 2.0RC1 off the cd and had the web configurator lock up on me when I went to RRD graphs. This may have been the machine I have it on as its old and questionable (was running straight off the CD too), just using it to see what's in it etc.

Running 1.2.3 right now and everything is ok but i like 2.0 better.

Is anyone running 2.0 RC1? Any problems with it?

Cool, just bought an old Thinkpad R31 to run pfsense and a cardbus ethernet adapter to go with it. Can't wait for it to get here lol.

Well I've been running 2.0RC1 on a Thinkpad T43 until the R31 gets here....so far it has been great. The traffic shaping has been working very well and I haven't had any problems with it locking up which I believe to have been from running it straight from a CD.

Got the R31 today and it looks like it had never been used lol. I measured the R31 at the wall and it only pulls 14.4watts with the backlight off!! I'll probably switch over to it sometime this weekend.
