OS and applications on SSD?

Putting together a new rig and thinking about storage. I'm considering the following...

256GB SSD containing OS and applications. Data on single WD Black HDD.

or

256 GB SSD containing OS. Applications and data on raid0 pair WD black HDDs.

Which do you think would perform better?

os AND applications on the ssd, for sure. 256 should be plenty. only large data such as videos/music will need to be kept on the HDD. documents etc. can fit on the ssd.

I use your first choice - OS and apps on the SSD with data on a HDD. Works really well, and with a 256 GB SSD, there's no space problem that way.

Are you asking if a raid0 pair of WD black HDDs could be capable of out-performing an SSD? I don't think the raided HDDs are fast enough to beat an SSD. But maybe there is some weird file-copying scenario (e.g., not actually using the data, but instead just copying it for the sake of copying it)? For OS and applications, SSD would win.

I'd put everything on the SSD and data on the HDD.

Don't forget a backup system of some sort!

Like everyone above, OS + Applications on SSD. Even the most bloated Windows will have a hard time filling up 256 GB alone. ^^

I think that 256GB SSD is adequate size for most gamers. I have a 256GB SSD with most of my currently played games and the Windows 7 on it. I have 9 games installed on it and 88GB free space. One of those games is FSX with addons and it's taking up 60GB. I also tweaked Windows 7 to use less space by disabling features I don't use like hibernation and system restore, although it was not necessary. X-Plane 10 with addons is on my 120GB SSD with about 52GB free space left.

Thanks. I mainly wanted to know if there is a performance hit with OS and apps on same SSD. If so I would have put the apps on raid0 HDD pair.

I plan on having multiple OSs. At least Windows 7, Server 2K8R2. Let see how much space is left after W7, and apps.
