Ortho K lenses - opinions?

I've been wearing glasses for ~9 years now, and they have been fine. Recently I have started to look at contacts but I am usually too rushed in the morning to bother putting them on.

I am thinking about these Ortho K lenses, the ones that correct your eyes at night and you take them out during the day.

Does anyone have any experience with these? How long does the effect clear vision usually last?

I have never heard of Ortho K lenses until now, reading about them makes me wary.

I wear contacts, it takes about 10 seconds to put them in, hopefully you have an extra 10 seconds in your rushed mornings or how else are you going to have time to take the Ortho K lenses out?

I've had Ortho-K lenses for *counts*.... 7 years now. I've only had my prescription changed once, I think, and my lenses/prescription have stayed the same for the past 3-4 years.

It takes a little getting used to at first, but once you get used to it, the freedom of not needing to worry about lenses (for things like sports or swimming) is absolutely wonderful.

Vision effects vary from person to person, but the most common is 1-2 days. Some people get benefits longer (a week or even a month), but they are rare. Mine last for about 24hrs or slightly less than that, depending on how long I wear the lenses to sleep.

All in all - check it out and talk to your optometrist. I'm 10000^10000 % pleased with my Ortho-K lenses.

At least you don't have to sign a medical waiver - I got mine back when they weren't FDA approved :D (each component was, but the components together as a package weren't :p)

How often do you have to replace the lenses? Do you clean them like regular lenses? Do you know if the replacement lenses (after the initial fitting) are more/less expensive than contacts? For a comparison, I wear quarterly replacement soft contacts and they're about $400/yr.

I'd love to ditch the contacts for daily wear - I work when chemicals sometimes and I worry about taking an eyeful of something nasty with my lenses in. I'm already down with the cleaning since I clean them every day - if the cost is compatible to what I'm doing now i might switch to them.

I'm probably going to try these out then. If they don;t work that well for me then I might look into lasic, would certainly help when the zombies hit :p

I've had the same pair of lenses for almost a year now. Ortho-K rigid gas permeable lenses (hard contacts) require a cleaning and conditioning solution that are different from soft lenses. I use boston advanced conditioner and cleaner (about $8 each for conditioner and cleaner). I think the lenses cost about $4-500, but they can be worn as long as your prescription stays the same, IIRC (check with your optometrist).
