orinoco silver wireless card not detecting network..

I recently installed a several-year-old (but unused) orinoco silver 802.11b wireless card (back when lucent owned orinoco) in a Dell Inspiron 3800 running Windows XP. I found drivers for it and updated its firmware with software that was designed for the Lucent Orinoco card (not the Proxim Orinoco wireless software) and installed the client software.

The problem is that it doesn't detect the wireless network where I work; it always returns with "no available networks". The diagnostics utility on the client manager software indicate that the card is fine. My T41 connects to the network without problems, as does the desktop computer using a usb wireless adapter.

The router is a Belkin 802.11b router with a 4-port hub.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated; thanks a lot in advance.

Have you tried running netstumbler to see if it can see your network through that?

If you are doing mac filtering, don't forget to add this nic's mac address to the list in your router.

One thing to note is that the Silver cards do not support 128-Bit WEP, which might be a requirement on your network. I'd suggest using NetStumbler like Cheetah mentioned.

I'm having the exact same problem. Orinoco Silver won't detect Belkin 802.11b router. All other cheapo trendnet cards work fine. No encyprtion is on right now. Weird.

Try the latest drivers from agere.com - also make sure to run the firmware update that's included in the driver archive

thanks very much for all responses. I'm trying them now.. MisterPresident, hope your problem has been resolved(?)

Edit: updated firmware (most recent I could find was from 2002) from proxim.com's site (the company that took over lucent, who originally made the card?)-- I couldn't find any firmware downloads on agere's site; cmetz, would you mind pointing me in the right direction please? I downloaded and installed Agere's newest drivers; still can't find anything. Netstumbler doesn't see the AP either, while it does find it on my t41.

Thanks for the help so far; please keep responses coming 🙂

Firmware update is in the same archive as the Agere driver. Just look around. Don't use the Proxim drivers, they're broken.

This does sound like a WEP problem, though - pretty much nobody uses the 40/64 bit WEP, it's either none or the full 104/128.
