I think this is a hot deal for an Orinoco card. I also have a $10 off Buy.com coupon in the email.

I this card equivalent to the Orinoco / Proxim a/b/g Combo card 8040-WD?? This card does not have a capability but are the other features the same as the combo card? Any input would be apprechiated.

thanks

Nice deal, I also received the $10 off $75 coupon but couldn't figure out what to buy.

I already have a Dell TrueMobile 1150 (rebadged Orinoco Gold) and it's awesome, best performance and reliability.

I'm admittedly biased (I have the Dell 1150 and think it's great) but has anybody done an objective review of the new 'g' and 'a+g' Orinoco cards? Or is it just a lot of the 'b' Orinoco cards' reputation carrying over? How's performance? How's interoperability?

edit: I see weepul and me were thinking along the same lines. :p

What are the diff between the Silver and Gold, just 64 vs 128 WEP?

The Gold card also will allow for an unlimited number of location profiles, while the Silver only will hold 2.

(Just in the interest of completeness...:))

The difference is 1150 is 802.11b only, meaning your top speed (in theory) would 11mbps, the new card is 802.11g/b meaning it supports new 802.11g standards with a maximum speed of 54mbps and is backwards compatible with 802.11b. You do need 802.11g comlpiant router/access point to tak advantage of higher speed though.

so if i get a b/g card, will it also work with "a" networks, just at the lower "a" speed?

I don't think so. You'd need to get an A/B/G card.

Does anyone know of a good site that deal with wireless networking, etc.?

Anyone know if the A/B/G or A/G cards have the antenna jack? The original 802.11b card does - hidden under a plug - but the a/b card does not.

I had a horrible experience with Proxim/Orinico and will probably never go back. I tried one of their USB Gold wireless USB NIC's and had horrible problems with it in XP. I could get it to work in Windows 98, but not XP. When I called tech support, every one of the tech's kept blaming it on my other hardware. One of the things that they were blaming it on was the fact that my WAP (Linksys WAP11) wasn't Wifi certified at that point. The funny thing is that I tried another USB device and it worked flawlessly in XP. I later found out that others had been having the same problems with the XP drives and they wouldn't aknowledge that.

My experience with orinoco card isn't too bad. Also note that wi-fi nic chipsets have blossomed over the past 2 years with many emerging. You can find other cards with better signal sensitivities, cooler, less cpu strain, among other advanced features. Orinoco is an overpriced handa, in my opinion... avoid Texus Instrument at any cost...

The b/g Orinoco card does have an external antenna connector. The a/b/g combo card does not and that is due to some regulatory thing because of the 11a 5ghz capability.

I went ahead and bought the 11b/g Gold card and it came out to $79.79 with shipping and tax. Too bad that the Orinoco card did not qualify for free shipping.

umm, just my 2cents, but I thought that the G standard was supposed to be compadible with a/b. an a/b/g card would just have the opptions to switch to a, b, or g mode. Am I mistaken?

the "g" standard is backwards compatible with "b" standard, however "a" is not AFAIK

Um, yes you do. I can't believe you would think that a 802.11b AP would communicate at anything higher than 802.11b, regardless of the wireless card used.

Um, peel your eyes open and read what I wrote

Let me spell it out; if you want speeds higher then 802.11b (i.e. "g" standard), you will need a router/AP that supports it, like 802.11g router/AP.
