Can anyone tell me where hamsters originated from, and when they were first discovered?

Note to everyone: This is after I've spent 1 1/2 hours researching this topic on google, so please don't direct me to google. :(

I know they originated somewhere in Syria. (Thank anyways, Allison) Just can't find the date and if they were wild or not..

Better shut the forums down... nothing has ever been discussed that couldn't be found through google.

Look it sounded like somone wanted us to do their report for them.

Here's the info btw, took 30 secs on google

"Syrian Hamsters were first domesticated in 1930, although the Syrian was presented as a new species in 1839. They are native to the deserts of Syria."

Gee, then why did you ask where they originated from?

Just can't find the date and if they were wild or not..

Did I miss the part where you asked if they were originally wild? Did you think that the first one was discovered in a pet store? :)

Here is a history including how they live in the wild. Took 30 sec also.

Wow.. awesome link! The broken images really add to the credibility of the web site.

I'm not trying to justify myself here, heh. But What kind of search terms are you all using? 'Hamster origins' didn't get me much.

Anyways, the reason why I asked is because I wasn't sure if all modern hamsters were descended from Syrians. Like, in allisolm's article, it also mentions the Chinese hamster..

All of the articles state the origin of the syrian hamster and that's all the information I found. I still have no idea where the first hamster was domesticated.

Thanks for all of your help, though. I'm getting more info on searching for 'Wild hamster' instead of hamster origins.

My point was that your argument was weak because you managed to pull up a really crappy hamster web site with google. You could have done a better job of proving your point by pulling up a web site that was actually worth visiting. But you blew it.

Like I care. You know, I'm not going to try to argue with you PowerMac4Ever because you never want to lose. I'm done talking about hamsters.

Instead of trying to tell me how I'm wrong, you use the old "I'm going to leave this argument because I'm better than you," statement. It's a classic... I've seen it countless times. btw.. I never lose because I'm a Winner, unlike you.
