This old retail game has given me the most headaches of any game I have owned on Vista x64.
First it would not install on my Vista x64,the trick is to install the game in 2K compatibility mode which at least installs the game, the next obstacle is running the game, well the problem is the CD protection it uses,it appears to use unsigned drivers since it always crashes at launch regardless of admin or compatibility mode, the simple fix is to replace the Gothic2.exe with Gothic 2: v1.31 (English) No CD fixed exe from here .
Once that is done the game will launch minus the intro movie(blank screen) but hitting escape will bring you to the main start menu then you can game.
There's even a WS hack that works.
US version and other regions may use a different copy protection on their retail version,so you may not have this problem(mine is UK version).
I have just finished the game from start to finish ,looks nice at 1680x1050 with the WS hack.
Just goes to show with patience and research most obstacles can be overcome.
