Thank You Rufio. You brought tears to my eyes this morning times two.
I said from the beginning that if this thread just brings one job it is worth it.

This thread is to use as a central Networking hub if you will during this crisis.
Thanks Mods for this thread sticky as it can be such an important tool

If you are one of the massive amounts of people place a post in here of where you are from and updates on how it is going. It would show trends of how things are in particular areas of the Country.

This truly shows the true power of the Internet and it has nothing to do with Computers, it is the Power of People coming together.

Sort of the same thing was started here but did not stay up to date very long. I wonder if whoever ran that site would want to update it more or maybe we could get a sticky or something.

Well, I'm LOOKING for a job. Just Graduated in August, do I qualify for this thread? :D

I was a CS major, with an IT Concentration. Just working at a computer hardware/repair place for now. Thinking about going back to school part time, to take classes. (Quit this job.) Take those classes as Audits (No Grade, just going to learn.) And in the meanwhile, use my free time to do more job hunting. I live in Knoxville, TN....and dmcowen674 I have TRIED Atlanta soo much. No luck.

Yeah, it sux.

Thanks Beast (Mike), never saw that webpage before, that is along the idea of what some of us were thinking of for regionalized contacts, hopefully we can keep it live and current with a continous thread, easier than trying to maintain a website page.

Of course you "qualify" for the thread, it is for everyone, not just in the IT Industry and all over the world.

Atlanta went down hard and fast from the Dot.com fallout, not recommended for trying to find an IT related position in this city that's for sure.

Graduated a year ago from Purdue University with a degree in Industrial Management (business degree with engineering math and sciences on top) and minors in Management Information Systems and Religious Studies. Currently living in Minneapolis, MN and working for Target doing ecommerce work with Amazon.com (they outsourced their ecommerce to Amazon). The job I currently have is a non salaried position with no benefits. I'd love to pursue anything MIS related or analyst related. PM me if you have any Minneapolis contacts or would like my resume.

Also, I'd like to pursue leading worship at a church as a full time vocation. Yes, these are two TOTALLY different roads, but who knows, right? :) If anyone knows of any churches in the Minneapolis area looking for a cutting-edge worship guy, PM me.

This is a good thread :)

hey joo guys and gals.

I've been unemployed for 5 months now in the RTP region onf NC.

However, in my job searching I've found jobs for others. :)

For those in the database and network IT fields, you might want to check the banks. They seem to have jobs on the East Coast:

Wachovia Job listings

Central Carolina Bank (CCB)

good luck, all

Ok, well here goes
Looking for something in Louisville Ky, as I am in school and am not relocating, although i will probably be transferring to UK in the fall, so anyone with a line in lexington would be appreciated

I studied an a+ and some networking in high school, dont have the certs though

Right out of HS I had a summer internship with UPS with their second level Lan Support. It was a mixed novell/nt environment but I mostly worked with novell. I was a total n00b to novell, but they really wanted to help someone out and get them an internship, and I was good enough with pcs that they took me on. Learned a bit, but wouldnt consider myself a Novell admin. Was responsible for tape backups/restores for the corporate building. Some PC upgrades, and I looked over some talented peoples shoulders as they ran sniffers and diagnosed troubles. Good experience for me and them.

While at UK, I worked for their Math Science Computing Department for two semesters. An all Win2k environment, I did a lot of product/compatabililty testing. Running filemon/regmon and basically getting programs to work across the network. This was back in 2000/2001 so we had troubles with users rights screwing up programs with just about every program installed. I dug out the necessary permissions that we needed to set in our batch jobs and got things running. Evaluated staroffice for them. Enjoyed the program but we ultimately decided that we couldnt convince the professors to accept the switch. Set up and installed a computer lab on campus. Again a great experience.

Thats about it for experience, I've been building/diagnosing pcs for several years for friends/families and am very comfortable working with them. Know this is a long shot but anyone with opportunities/suggestions let me just say thanks. Currently working a random job, not related to computers at all. Still have bills to pay, but would really like to get back into the industry.

Thanks again

<---- Lost software development contract in mid-July (budget cuts) and has been looking for work since. I've had many interviews but either the position is eliminated/closed or filled by someone else despite me always being 'at the top of the list'.

I did come across this list of job sites (mostly IT-related...some may be in the Baltimore area only, too)
link

For Turin:

check:
LouisvilleWorks.com and KentuckyJobs.com and, of course, the monster.com, careerbuilder.com and flipdog.com sites.

Search current CDC job openings. Not just for bio-geeks, we have a fair amount of turnover in the IT department. Job would involve a lot of "putting out fires", but pay is decent. Locations all over the US. PM me if you want more info or have questions.

Well, I have a bunch of sites bookmarked at home, but here are two that I frequent often:

FlipDog
ComputerJobs.Com <-- I like this one, you can start searches by major cities, entry level jobs (me), new job listings, etc.

I HATE monster.com, the search for jobs is soo un-user friendly (In my opinion.)

Networking tip 101.

Want jobs in America Buy American, only do business with companies who don't outsource thier IT and call centers to India.

This is not some nationalism comment it's simple economics where your communities and livelihoods are at stake. These companies move overseas because not many care anymore and buy solely on price, we are digging our own economic grave. The only way they'll come back is if you are willing to work for the same wage as someone in a third world country or we stop giving them our business.

Well, I got a question for you all, and maybe you all that have been working can help me shed some light on what I should do.

I'm working right now at a hardware place (as stated above.) Pay is not great at all, just enough for my expenses. I'm still living with my parents (pathetic, huh?). Anyways, debating whether I should go back to school next semester PART TIME, find a job elsewhere (I can't keep this one, cuz it's full time) and take those classes pass/fail. (As stated above.) Then, I'll have more time to learn stuff on my own, that I've been wanting to do. Meanwhile, searching for jobs. Do you all think that's a good idea? I don't need a great income (Cuz not really many expenses.) But I would love to have some free time, to teach myself other stuff (More Java, and programming in general.)

What do you all think??? I'm seriously considering it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx in Advance.

GREAT idea for a thread by the way.

Wow. Sorry to see so many out of work.

I am not outta work, but don't work in the IT industry.

However, I was trying to change careers by taking Cisco courses (got my CCNA...yay) Was taking semester 5 when I ended up having to move to a new house and stuff so I just got to busy and had to drop. Am still thinking about taking it again in January but it looks like there is no point. I mean even if I get my CCNP I would have virtually zero real world experience and have to compete for a job with all these guys who are already in the industry!?

I just don't see much happening for me because of that. Suxx too I really wanted to get into a networking career. :(

i happen to be a civil engineer with about 3 years of experience. i used to design communications towers. the company downsized post 911 and i was the first to go. it's been about 5 months now and i am still unemployed. getting ready to move soon here. the job market is slim right now. as soon as unemployment runs out i will need to get a job dealing with anything i can get my hands on.

I currently have a job with salary & benefits, but I'm really looking to find something better. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a techie with a liberal arts upbringing (graduated from Carolina in May '01 with BAs in econ and poli sci.) Should I get some certs and look for work in the IT field?

I don't think I'm ready to go back to school for my MBA just yet. I'd really like to get some more experience doing marketing analysis in a Fortune 500 firm. But the market for these jobs is ultra-competitive (fresh grads are fighting with MBAs for positions...not cool at all.) I don't really know what I should do, but in the meantime I'm stuck in a dead-end job (but at least I'm getting paid?)

I guess its my turn...

Graduated in May with a BS in Computer Systems Engineering. I have experience working for the school's law school doing Help Desk. I haven't found anything since :(.

Strange no luck getting any part-time work since moving back home to New Jersey. Im too smart with my college
degree or not "dumb" enough :(.

Right now working on getting my A+ cert. I dont think it will be that bad, just it costs some $$$$.

I have to say though its not fun living at home. :)

actually simple economics dictates that there should be no long run effect on employment. american dollars must come back to us in some form, after all.

I am also in RTP in Raleigh, NC.

I graduated in May with a BS in Computer Science. Haven't been able to find a job. I posted a couple night ago about possibly starting my own company. I am currently doing consulting work on the side while I work a sales job full time. The consulting work is good money but is not a steady income.

I have had no luck getting a software job at all. Not a single interview. I have the skills and working as a consultant has given me real world experience but it seems that no one cares unless you have 2 years of development experience.
