Original Half Life Now Available on OS X

Saw this posted on another forum, the original version of Half Life is now available for the Mac on Steam. It says "beta" next to the name so I assume it is a beta version but still, nice to see it on OS X.

Just came in to post this. Ten bucks, downloading now! SO EXCITED!! 😀

It's interesting that they even bothered to port the code. Couldn't you just pony up the scratch for a license of VMware Fusion and run it damn near native?

It's milking the cash cow, when income from one game diminishes on it's platforms, more can be made by a small investment into another. They'll release it on phones one day and in 20 years they'll likely still creak out a couple bucks on a plug n play gamepad or something, just like Sega does with their old genesis games.

Just fired up the first couple chapters, what a rush of memories! HL1 is essentially what got me into computers...I believe I had an integrated GPU at the time, a Gateway PC iirc, and had to figure out what a video card was and how to upgrade it...just had no idea about anything computer-related. I think I had an AMD K2, probably 300mhz or something with like an S3 video card. Haha 😀

Back then, it was a terrible visual experience even with the vid card upgrade because I was a kid with no cash for upgrades at the time and bought a barely-capable 3D card, but I still managed to plow through the game at like VGA resolution (or worse lol). Incredible playing it at 1920x1200 on max settings on a 24" LCD. Levels load in under a second, even off a spinning hard drive (not SSD!). Really really cool, looking forward to playing it through again! YAY!!

Possibly, although it doesn't seem like they would make enough money in new sales on OS X to justify porting it.

I am thinking it is more a PR move. It is a good way to promote Steam and Valve to OS X gamers by porting their classic game to the platform.

Well the only way Valve is going to get their linux business going is to push content, and the only content they have for the moment is their own catalog. Maybe its part PR but it was necessary. OSX and linux are brothers so what benefits one also benefits the other.

I wouldn't look a gift horse is the mouth though its a really cool thing Valve is doing.

So you actually have to pay for it if you already bought HL?

EDIT: Just installed Steam on my Mini, and it looks like you dont have to pay for it if you already own HL.

Well their big push is the Steam Big Picture mode for your living room - and all the Steamboxes (retail or DIY). So yeah, even if they don't make any money, or lose money, at least the games are becoming cross-platform, so Steam can get a living room presence.

I'm definitely for it

that's good, who doesn't already own the original H-L? 😀

I am not finding a mac version on steam, am I missing something?

It doesnt show in the Store, just in the Library as Beta.

So I purchase the PC version then the osx beta shows up?

You dont have Half-Life?????

I assume its just a Mac version that shows up when the game is cross platform. That screenshot I posted are of the games I bought on Windows that now have Mac versions. If I were to post my Steam library on Windows, I would need 10 images to capture all the uninstalled games.

Oh, so in other words, I believe yes is the answer to your question.

Can't you plug the cd key into steam to load it up? Or if you bought the orange box I think it included Half Life 1.

maybe, but I just bought it again. Its quicker to pay the 10 bux and play on my mac laptop. I havent seen my cds for HL in years.

And thats how they get ya!

Whatever, as soon as the C&C ultra pack (or whatever it's called) goes on sale on origin again, i'm buying it. That'll be the 3rd or 4th time that I will have bought Red Alert 2, and the 2nd/3rd for a bunch of the others.

True dat. I purchase and repurchase games all the time. If I deem it worthy the devs can get my cash again. Valve in particular because they still take the time and care about a 15 yr old game and put in on ios. Not many companys do that any more.

Playing HL now and its running great on my old macbook pro mid 2009.

hahaha I still have all the physical CD/DVDs from back in the day. Some still in the case, and most in a binder. I saw a few years ago in my mom's garage a shoebox full of floppies. Tie Fighter anyone? The only games I rebuy are ones that I bought during my PS3 phase. Although for some reason I have 3 copies of the original HL. Probably when I had roommates and we used to play CS all day long. So I even have physical copies of games I didnt buy! lol
