Origin of the Christmas Holiday

No flames please. We all are aware that the popular belief of Christmas is a celebration/remebrance of the birth of Christ in a manger in Jerusalem on or around the 25th of December. Our method of numbering years is based upon the birth of Christ (BC/AD.) Here. Our local TV station weatherman had an interesting note on the forecast this morning that stated that the early Roman empire had a celebration around this time of year where they brought trees into thier homes, lit with candles to celebrate the Winter Solstice. This was before the birth of Christ (46 B.C.) Could it be that an early Jewish scribener created a "story" to popularize this Roman Celebration and call it the "Bible?" Was it all just propaganda?

I'm not doubting my beliefs, nor should anyone else, I just felt this was an intersting topic.

December 25th was the birthday of Mithra/Mithras, the Roman God of Light. Adopting it as the birthday of Christ was a move to make the conversion to the Christian religion more palatable to practicioners of Mithraism.

<< all the retailers all over the world people pile in their stores to buy, buy, and buy! >>

is not going to work on me!!! I look at it this way.... there's a lot more ppl in the world, if the true meaning of Christmas to be celebrated (THIS ONLY APPLIES TO CHRISTIAN FOLK) is realized, that would need that need our help......and this is not only in money terms, but politically, socially and economically.......FLAME ME!!!! The gift was born in a manger- a smelly and shatty place, nothing to be/or have to be decorative in a sense to have it glittery and shinny...kills me to see all lights golden paper, etc.etc...mAn....i know i am going to get it!!!! Ok, next flame...

Jesus was born in 7 B.C. not 46 B.C. And Jesus was actually born in October... Look it up, the infos out there, i just dont feel like looking it up right now...

The timing of Christmas really has nothing to do with the actual birth date of Christ but was adopted by the Church to appeal to pagan religious rites. The Church did quite a bit of this type of thing in order to have more people converting to Christianity without having to give up their pagan religious days of feasting or celebration.
