1. A small crystal of iodine is added to your mixture during the setup of this reaction. Explain what role iodine plays in the procedure.

2. After the reaction between phenylmagnesium bromide (the grignard reagent) with carbon dioxide ( in part B of the experiment procedure), hydrochloric acid (HCl) is added to the reaction mixture. Explain what role HCl plays in the procedure.

3. There are two main side products that can form during a Grignard reaction using phenylmagnesium bromide. What are these two side-products ? Show the reaction equation for their formation.

Watch Breaking Bad. Everything you need to know about chemistry is in that show.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: Do your own homework!!!!

OP, Google - The Grignard Reaction.

https://www.chegg.com/homework-help...setup-reaction-explain-role-iodine--q39103570 (Register to see the answer to your 3 questions.)
Best guess?
1. Activating reagent.
2. HCl protonates the benzoate ion present as the bromomagnesium salt and also dissolves any basic magnesium salts and any unreacted magnesium metal that may be present.
3. Benzene and Hydroxide?
PhMgBr + H2O -> PhH + Mg2+ + HO- +Br-

François Auguste Victor Grignard was the son of a sail maker. His character was described as having humble and friendly attitude. After attempting to major in mathematics, Grignard failed his exams and enlisted into the army in 1892.

Perhaps joining the army will provide you the answers you seek.

First thing first, a majority of people here, are in the IT, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering industry or college programs. Biology or organic chemistry is one of the last things that relate to anything in those fields, although one may argue about Mechanical Engineering. Although, "Group 14 Hydrides" are only a small part of a mechanical engineers job. To be honest I had to do some reasearch to even find the term "Group 14 Hydrides". Thus, I think you are on the wrong batch of forums if you are looking for a fast answer, you are better off at a chemistry forum on the web if you are looking for a quick and accurate response to your questions.

Second, the last time I had biology class was in high school, as for chemistry was in my undergrad. I am currently doing my masters.

Even better, maybe they should do their own damned homework, presumably they're going to school to get an education.

PS: Rock salt

Organic Chem is the weed-out class for those that can, and cannot, do Chemistry. Or so my wife, the Chemist, says.

1. Don't ask strangers on the internet to help you with your homework. Seriously - work with your classmates and don't hesitate to take advantage of office hours. I don't just mean this from the standpoint of it being kind of obnoxious trying to get strangers to do your homework for you. The relationships you'll form will be far more valuable that any individual answers you might get.

2. It looks like you're probably synthesizing benzoic acid and triphenolmethanol, but you haven't actually given any details of what you're working on. Things like "this reaction" and "the procedure" are super-unhelpful.

3. But seriously. Trying to get homework answers off of strangers on the internet is stupid. Don't do it.

So what you're saying is... rock salt?

Seriously, answers should be in your notes. Iodine cleans the surface of the magnesium metal. I cant remember what its forming, but it removes oxides.

HCl makes the carboxylic acid instead the magnesium salt.

I totally forget what the side products are.
