Fvck no. That's basically voting whether you want the undercarriage of your car to rust or not. Who the hell would vote yes when we've easily taken care of ourselves this for this long without salting the roads?

Because it ruins automobiles & anything else it touches.

The weather here is bad enough, ie: all the rain. Salting the roads during winter would just add insult to injury. If I wanted my cars to last like I was living on the ocean, I'd move there.

We use gravel, and it works great.

The only problem is that it often gets left on the roads for a while before the sweepers come to pick it up, and it gets kicked up and causes windshield chips and other cosmetic damage..

I'd rather deal with paint chips than rust.

Absolutely NOT!

The gravel is bad enough.

The ice and snow are so infrequent, we should just wait it out like the sane folks did this weekend.

Yeah, I agree.

That could turn into an argument FOR the use of salt, though... "It's so infrequent, it won't hurt anything..."...

heh.

gravel > salt

we pretty much use just gravel here - it is usually too cold for salt to have much effect.

i think the gravel is some percent salty though, but not much.

LOL....

Damn! Just watched the news segment.

Windshield crack repair places' business is up 8x in the last few days! haha.....

Basically they said that we will never use salt here, because of all the rivers and streams & the endangered salmon.

We *could* do it, but it would involve the altering of Portland's catch basin, ie: all the road drains...... it'll never happen, at least anytime soon.

Nice to here the voice of reason.

I'm from Ohio originally, and they USED salt.

See, the funny thing is, all those poor people driving cars from the mid-70s and early-80s? Being poor, not only do they have older cards, but, strangely, decide not to wash them all winter to save car wash funds (as it is, after all, too cold to wash them in their yard like they'd usually do). Several counties in Ohio you could drive through and any time of year 80% of the cars would have doors and trunks, etc all rusted out.

Really added to the scenery.

Really, REALLY prefer Oregon's solution. Lava rock = no rust.
