Oregonians, I need your input about Portland.

Some friends and I are going to be in Portland next weekend. Age range of group is 23-34. I really never been in the area and would like to hear what AT members have to say about it. One gal in the group does have a birthday so we wouldn't mind celebrating that as well.

Recommendations of restaurants, hotels/motels, lounge/bars, and nightlife are greatly appreciated.

I'm not from PDX, but I visit often. Late night snack, head out to Voodoo Doughnuts in the city. Biscuits off of HWY 84 and SE Johnson is pretty good for breakfast. The Kennedy School (McMennamins sp?) is a nice place for a burger and beer.

McMenamins is a must visit. They have many historic locations around the Portland area. The Kennedy School is a good one, and also Edgefield, which is a bit outside of the city.

There are myriads of brewpubs, including McMenamins, that are very good.

If you want to do any sight seeing/hiking, Multnomah Falls is a must visit; about 45 minutes east of Portland.

At least 2 of you mentioned McMenamins. That is something worth checking out.

In terms of sight seeing/hiking, I doubt the group is up for that. I'm not even sure the weather will be that great for it either.

The weather is part o the visit. ;)

You might get lucky. It's usually a steady rain by the end of October though. I don't think I can remember a Halloween that wasn't rainy.

<-- Just moved from Portland to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Which sucks, btw.

<-- misses Portland :(

Get some Spicy Mac & Cheese at Montage.

Portland has more than 100 strip clubs - GO! I'll recommend Devils Point

Delta Cafe - Great southern/soul food. Get a basket of friend okra!

Twilight Room - cheap beer & burgers at a old bar

Todai is hardly unique to the Portland area.

If you like Vietnamese food, I recommend trying a local restaurant on Pho Row (NE Sandy Blvd). I like the pepper salted squid at Thien Hong.

I'm going to avoid Todai as I been to the one in Seattle quite a few times already. I'll avoid vietnamese places as well because Pho is too much a regular staple for me. A bit more upscale Pan-asian would be nice for dinner (similar to Wild Ginger in Seattle). A steak/ribs place would be great as well. For something to pass the time, perhaps mini-golf or go cart.

Just to add a little bit more detail, I'm very interested romantically with one of the gal in the group. I'm the one who is in charge of planning this and I do want to impress her.

For a steak place, check out Saylor's.

I've hiked Multnomah Falls when it was raining :)

here's both in one location... plus, you can sneak across the road to fry's when nobody is looking ;)

Nice! That's what I'm looking for. A couple of us are also a big fan of Frys as well, but that could be a trap for us.

Well, since I didn't attend public school in Oregon and actually know how to spell, I am not an Oregonian.
I was an Oregon resident for two years and may be able to offer one suggestion.

If you decide to hit up a strip club, look in the Gentlemans Club Guidebook and find a really nice one. The kind that has 5 star cuisine and conference rooms and walk-in humidors. The kind that requires a suit & tie. The kind that doesn't have a huge neon sign out front.

You will spend a bit of money, but I think you would find it a much more enjoyable experience. You will look at all lesser strip clubs with disdain.

If you do in fact get some nice weather, I'd recommend heading up to Washington Park. Beautiful views, the rose gardens, Japanese gardens, and lots of beautiful areas to see.

As for food, a couple places I'd recommend downtown are Dragonfish (Asian cafe; great food and atmosphere), Rock Bottom Brewery, and of course any of the aforementioned McMenamin's. Kells Irish Pub is a great place to go at night, though it can be rather crowded. Saturday Market is also fun to do during the day.

Of course there are many, many more options, so I also recommend just walking around and seeing what looks good. The MAX is free within much of the downtown area, so if you're feet get tired you can still get around to several places of interest.

Good luck and hope for no rain!

Just so you know, Wilsonville is about 20mi south of Portland.

That's not too bad as I will have to be going to Corvallis also.

I recommend getting travel plans from Uranians rather than Portlandians. Don't they make cement in Portland? Maybe you could tour a cement plant and they would hand out a free 80 pound bag sample to each of you. The good times are just waiting for you in Portland!

THIEN HONG! Somebody else who knows good food when they see it! I whole-heartedly recommend the pepper salted squid. I moved away from Portland about 5 years ago and everytime I go back, this is my first stop. I think it's 39th and NE Sandy Blvd. GO GO GO!

Also check out The Acropolis. Cheap ($4 last time I was there about 3 years ago) steak and bewbs!
