SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A House committee has narrowly passed a bill that would give Oregonians the option of pumping their own gasoline.
The Friday vote was 4-3 in the House Transportation Committee. Under the bill, HB2749, stations would still have to provide service for customers aged 55 and older and for those with disabilities.
Oregon and New Jersey are the only states that do not allow self-service.
The Oregon Legislature last considered such a measure 14 years ago according to the office of Rep. Randy Miller, R-West Linn, the bill's sponsor.
A spokesman for Gov. Ted Kulongoski said the governor does not favor the bill because it would cost jobs.
