I am going to order two 4GB sticks of RAM for my PowerMac today. It last 2.5GHz quad-core model from late 2005. If it works, I will have a total of 20GB of RAM, in a 6x2GB+2x4GB configuration, up from 16GB, in a 8x2GB configuration. I will post when I check if the RAM is detected by System Profiler and if it is addressable. According to IBM, the PowerMac can take up to 64GB. According to Apple, the PowerMac can take up to 16GB. We shall soon see who is correct.

Well, I have no idea why you need 20GBs to begin with....but what I might have done, assuming their app reads Macs, is first go to Crucial and download their system scanner. It's excellent, and would tell you what you have and what upgrades yr system can support.

Just delved and see Crucial did add this option for Macs...

Edit: It also strikes me that DDR2, being older, must cost a lot more than DDR3. Usually, the older the compatible ram, the more it costs. Not that any RAM is inexpensive.

Wait -- checking . . . checking . . .

Ah. . . . These are the stellar workhorses I use for four of the five household PCs . . . I know about the price of these . . .

Nothing has changed, really. At one time, they might have sold for $80.

OWC claims that the late 2005 PowerMac G5s can only take up to 16GB, and usually they're pretty good about finding out if Apple's listed maximums actual maximums or just suggestions.

O! Am so happy this system uses more affordable DDR3....plus, I lucked out with an upgrade kit re crucial sticks on ebay even before this puppy arrived, a real bargain and they are excellent, the sticks. My board maxes out at 16....I will never need more than the 8 I now have.

Did you try the Crucial tool? Did yr sticks arrive yet? Are we safe from Ebola in Manhattan?:sneaky:

I was just commenting on the price of DDR2, based on my particular G.SKILL experience. You'd think it wouldn't vary much in a competitive market with other RAM-makers, but then -- maybe it could. Dunno.

Crucial is also good, but I had troubles with them in 2007-2008. Of course, this thread highlights a PowerMAC. I have nothing "firsthand" with that, either.

I know. I wasn't suggesting he get Crucial sticks, I was suggesting he employ their scanner tool I linked to, to determine what this system maxes out at re RAM. And, I did make sure the tool works with Macs, appears it has for a long time. Whole thing would take 27 seconds.

Why not? I know, this is an adventure for the OP to outsmart Apple, right?:sneaky:

You're saying the Crucial tool works regardless whether you use Crucial or other RAM?

Of course!!!!! Give it a go....it's kinda fun!:D Its reads yr drives too. But not tea leaves. Works with ANY COMPUTER.

Naturally, after doing its thing it will make specific suggestions re upgrades, AND those, of course, will be Crucial hardwares. It's a very cool little thing!!!

Running diagnostic apps is my form of gaming.():)

PS: Just got a new one and ran it. It is SO FUN.:D And, you get accurate, detailed data. And, if U expand the categories when the results present, you will see many offers for kits, drives all guaranteed compatible. This system now has a Crucial SSD (along with WD backup drive) and half the ram is Crucial, but scanner has worked in every system I have ever had.

In my case, way too much to put up in one or two screenies.

No signing up, no registration, no spamming....just a very cool, well written free tool. Again, were I the OP, I would have gotten and run it immediately to learn my options in specifics.

I think they are wrong. I don't think they tested 4GB sticks.

Nothin wrong with adventure!!:D The new sticks did not arrive yet? Wondering....are you having throttling issues with the RAM you have?

Also, did you get and run the Crucial scan? I mean given it would take 11 seconds with no downside, I can't imagine why you wouldn't, if just out of curiosity.

Is it possible the official specs on this board came from when 4GB sticks were not available? Sure.
