Ordering Coffee in different countries

So here in Canada at Tim Horton's or Mcdonald's we generally order coffee like this:

1 cream 1 sugar = Regular
2 cream 2 sugar = Double double
3 cream 3 sugar = Triple triple

If you want something unusual... like 1 cream 3 sugars.. then you say it out the long way.

But I learned the hard way last year in the UK they do not do cream and sugar in any recognizable way. I tried to get coffee at Mcdonalds in London and just asked for cream and sugar... instead I got a "white coffee" with no sugar. It tasted like bullshit. I thought maybe it was self serve cream and sugar but I could not find any in the condiment area.

How do people order coffee in the US or UK correctly?

"One large coffee please". If I drank coffee with cream and sugar, they better not put it in for me. There's about a 100% chance it would get fucked up.

It's unfortunate but even Tim Horton's is a national coffee chain and they still can't get the cream and sugar to be consistent. I don't get it. They have exact measure dispensing machines (push twice and two "units" worth of sugar drops) and the coffee is still inconsistent. I agree with you.

My wife works at Starbucks and the consistency lies in the person assembling your drink. The syrup pumps are metered pumps, true, but if the barista is in a hurry they can short-stroke the pump, add too much milk, or any of a half-dozen other things. The espresso machines themselves have to be calibrated every day and that can lead to inconsistency.

If you get milk in a drink (latte, etc) much of the taste depends on how hot they steam the milk, how they steam the milk, etc. You can screw a drink up really fast by over-steaming (or over-temping) the milk.

My grandfather told me when I was a young lad: "If you are going to drink coffee, learn to drink it black." and have done so ever since... with the occasional diversion to a vanilla latte for fun.

It's a good thing my wife works for Starbucks... or we'd be broke buying coffee.

If the coffee is so bad that I have to add cream and sugar to make it drinkable...Just give me a coca-cola.

I put milk in my coffee just to cut down on the acidity. I never liked putting sugar in it.

I say "double espresso please"

2 cream? Does it come in lumps in Canada?

"Cup of coffee, X cream, Y sugar"

As a former McSoldier I am familiar with this phrase.

The high acidity is just one reason I don't drink coffee from Starbucks. (that and the "burnt taste" that most of their coffees seem to have)

Single serving cream packages.

The only time I use cream and sugar is making cappuccino at home. I use very light sugar, and a lot of cream. I drink it with cookies as a dessert.

Is that actually cream or UHT crap or vegetable fat and milk solids?

Most every "coffee creamer" I've seen is nothing like real cream.

As for people who put stuff in coffee, there's nothing wrong with doing so (obviously), but have you ever tried black coffee made with a french press or other non-gas station means?

Depends. One of the most popular is Half and Half which is half milk and half cream. It's ultrapasteurized, and put in little plastic containers. There's also fake liquids, and fake powders, some of which are flavored.

Here is what I hear at starbucks when I drop by for some hot chocolate or coffee:

"OMG! I'll take a double machiatto super duper large with like, no sugar and soy milk and like 2 shots of expresso. Thanks? K"

Their salted caramel hot chocolate thing is amazing. Other than that I just go to PJs or brew my own Community House coffee.

Who? Me?

Yeah I use a french press sometimes, mostly I use a stove top moka pot. I don't like drip coffee and full espresso machines are too much hassle at home.

Ick! That stuff always tastes weirdly greasy and sweet.

I usually drink my coffee black but if I'm feeling a bit grim l'll sometimes put some real cream and a bit of dark sugar in.

If I go to Starbucks in the first place, you BET I'm going to order a frou-frou drink. I can make perfectly delicious drip coffee at home for much less than Starbucks will sell it, but I can't make a triplecaramelhazelnutvanillaskinnymochachinnowithwhipanddoubleespresso.

I agree. Starbuck's coffee is terrible. I like their coffee based sugary drinks, but I don't consider those coffee.

I just like my coffee black (and hot, can't do iced coffee). I did try something my wife got one time called a i think a "chilled caramel machiato" which was really really good and oh so sugary. Not really sure if you could even call it a coffee drink at that point.

I would agree Starbucks makes their coffee too strong... and I like robust coffee, just not so freaking strong.

My wife tells me about some of the idiot drinks people order, it's quite comical.

half a Splenda or half Equal/half Sugar in the Raw.... really? You can taste the difference?

Just be nice to the person who is taking your order... if someone pisses my wife off... she gives them Decaf!

Its not that its too strong, its burnt. They roast their beans too much.

I tried doing Starbucks but it is burnt in most of their varieties. Even if you get it in a bag, it taste that way at home. Personally, the regular roast at Dunkin Donuts is my favorite and I just make it at home each morning.

Starbucks also uses a higher percentage of robusta beans vs arabica for cost reasons.
