A friend ordered up Insight Cable Internet. But on a whim he plugged in the cable to his tv too and he gets a signal. Is basic cable automatically piggybacked onto Cable Internet? He doesn't pay for the other cable, just the internet.

they are supposed to put a filter on the line to filter out the video portion if you only pay for the broadband service. but, i suppose you can complain that ever since they put on a filter, your cable modem keeps on getting dropped.

I have it like that now.... The filter applies the opposite direction... video they can't filter out (except for the extended channels)

They just raise the rates of just cable to be the same price as basic cable and internet.

EDIT:

Well that's the way it works here with Adelphia

If you use it, or do something to get it, would that be called fraud....

You're 100% wrong - they can now filter out any channel. Just because your company isn't doing it doesn't mean it can't be done. Also, cable companies are required to offer "lifeline" cable for around $10/month that includes all the over-the-air channels. This obviously costs quite a bit less than the cable modem only option.

I'm not sure. I mean i wouldn't actively try to get it. I would try to plug it in, if it works great, but I wouldn't go to any lengths to get it. Just wondering why some companies would filter and some wouldn't? Too much many power to install the filter?

They charge me either way. They call it something like non-subscriber fee if you only want cable modem. The fee is the exact amount if you wanted to get basic cable TV.

A lot of the times the tech that comes to your house gets lazy and doesn't add the filter like he is supposed to.

Sounds like another Comcast customer.

At least that's the deal here in SW Washington with Comcast. With prior providers (@Home and ATTBI), they did actually install a filter to block out the basic cable (that requires no cable box). I had to contact Comcast a couple of times before the techs finally found and removed it.
