Ordering a Digital Rebel XT sometime this weekend/week

I've decided that it's finally time to order the camera since my family is going to Carmel, CA for the 4th of July weekend and that will offer great photographic opportunities ... I was originally going to get it early-to-mid July ...

Anyways, I only have enought money for the camera with kit lens and a CF card. I've already decided on the silver one, but I don't have any idea on which CF card to get. I know it should be a rather high speed, probably 2GB. Any recommendations?

Oh and when I have money for new lenses, which ones should I get?

And what little things am I missing? Lens cleaner, camera bag ... anything else?

If you want a good card go with a 1GB as you can find them for $40 AR almost every week, and that includes the 10Mbps ones. No matter what you get make sure it says 10MB per second. They can ultra or uber fast all they want but if it is not 10MB then it is not a fast card.

If you decided 1 GB is not enough (it should fit 150+ pics on it at max jpeg, though a fair bit less on RAW) then look online for instructions on dismantling a Rio Carbon. Buy one of those for less than $200, dismantle it, and get the 5 GB CF card from the inside.

It's like 650 bucks for the camera alone iirc right?

I believe with lens kit it runs ~$900-999 and without $800-899, but thats just what I have seen. I think you can get the regular Rebel for $650ish for the body

umm i can get 144 large fine jpegs on a 512 card with my D70, i know the XT is 8mp not 6 however the file size isnt that much if any bigger for the jpegs

and also i thought they started to make it near impossiable to take the Micro Drives from teh small mp3 players and use them in cameras, at least i read they did for teh creative one anyway

and yes they are microdrives and they are SLOW

Thats the trade-off, slow for more space if you want to get one for cheaper. I was estimating on the number of pics, I prefer to estimate on the low side. I can barely fit 60 pics on a 256mb card when using 4 mp RAW so I extrapolated from that. I am betting he could fit around 200 max jpg and 100+ RAW on a 1 gb but again, those are only estimates.

you're 1st lense should not be that crappy 50mm. please dont get that get a multi purpose like a 20-55 or 18-55 or 20-80

or you can just get the stock lens.

and 1st of all i think you should get the nikon d70 :) very nice camera, much nicer than xt

Anyway, as for a CF card, I went with a Kingston 1GB CompactFlash Elite Pro Memory Card. It is fast, and fairly cheap. At the lowest JPEG compression and highest resolution, I can get over 250 shots on the card.

the 50mm f/1.8 is one of the best lenses in canon's catalog. it optically outperforms damn near every other lens they make. and it's their cheapest lens. if he said he had tons of cash laying around i'd have suggested the f/1.4

for $70 or so...the 50mm f/1.8 is one of the best values you can get. It is a great lens.

The 50mm is the best value in the Canon lineup. It's so cheap he can buy that and whatever else he needs. My first two lenses were the 50mm/f1.8 and the 70-200/f4 followed by the 17-40/f4

I got a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB CF card for my 20D. It cost me around $150. I can take about 470 pics in JPG on one card. Ecost usually has good deals on these cards.

The first lens I got for my camera was the EF-S 17-85mm IS. The second lens I got was the EF 50mm F/1.4.

The 50mm lens takes unbelievable pictures. Its background blur is so fantastic, the pictures look professional. It was definitely worth purchasing IMO. The 17-85mm is versatile but I'm not too big a fan of it. There is no background blur whatsoever on it. I think for my next lens I might want to step it up to a faster zoom lens like a F/2.8. Eventually when my kids grow up and start doing sports I'll get a big zoom.

chances are he can afford the lens i suggested, which is dirt cheap and very fast. it comes with the 18-55 already. a zoom lens at 3x the price is going to have worse resolution and will be much slower. no zoom lens in existence can beat the 50 /f1.8 in terms of speed. and you'd have to spend big cash to get one with better resolution. for learning how to take shots, frame shots, and use various exposure combinations for artistic effect there is no better lens.
