More like you got 15 solid suggestions. I still think you should just get it with the monitor, then sell it. FYI s/h is only $30, so you're looking at $400 for the whole thing to your doorstep (maybe some tax), sell the monitor locally for about $50-$80 since it's brand new, drops the price of the system down to around $320-$340. Problem is?

He didn't even take the time to checkout the PowerEdge servers before turning that down that suggesting and making an erroneous statement about them, you really think he'll take the time to sell the monitor locally?

I still miss my 340 🙁...some lucky guy on the Hardforums got it for $180 SHIPPED to his door. I got it for $220 shipped myself, complete with the 80GB SATA drive, the 512MB dual channel memory, and the faster Celery back last Feb or something. Great little box.

Get the system and E-Bay or FSFT forum the monitor. The costs of shipping should not be that high and it will reduce the net cost of the system.

Look at what the cost would be of getting a system without a monitor vs with a monitor and then unloading it, if not needed.

If you know so much about computers, then you would know a Dell Poweredge server does not need any special instructions, and is just called that due to the case and options you can configure it with.

But since you wanted to be a smartass to people that were helping you, what did you expect?

We have a Dell PowerEdge at work and it's a giant, loud, rackmount server.

I know that there are PowerEdges that come in regular tower cases, but maybe the OP didn't know that. Not everyone is familiar with Dell's various models and names.

i know very well what they are but they dont need one for checking email/browsing the net and the odd word doc

and heres the deal with selling the monotor, im sure I coudl sell it, however I am in boston my rents live in upstate NY ~7 hours away, and THEY have no idea how to sell sh!t on the internet

Apparently you don't know them, because you would know Dell often has very basic, entry-level servers for $299 that are excellent for browsing and checking e-mail. The only thing that makes them different than the B series is pretty much the case and the fact you can choose the bare-bone options when configuring them.

And if you sold it online, how difficult would it be to give your parents an address to ship it to?

what EVERYONE has said above and I can not stress over and over if you call them you WILL get a beter deal than the point and click menu online no question (unless you find some uber-coupon deal).

Personally, I disagree with the recommendations to pick up one of the PEs (presumably an SC430). With his situation - i.e. parents are computer illiterate and several hours away - it doesn't make much sense to buy a machine from Dell and then load a non-supported OS on it. Since Dell doesn't offer tech support (officially at least) for any of their PEs with XP as an OS, OP would be relegated to providing 100% of the tech support for his parents. You would be much better off picking up a Dimension or an Optiplex from the outlet and extending the warranty on it. That way they have a system complete with warranty, and more importantly tech support at a phone number other than yours. Trust me on this - my parents only live an hour away, and I regret setting my dad up with a 400sc. 😱
